Kickin' It in the Kitchen with Michelle Calva-Despard

There's something weird about my friend Michelle. She loves to cook. She makes up recipes. She whips up dishes without a cookbook, and the food actually tastes good. Then she writes down her recipes and shares them. Who needs a cookbook when you can do that?

I go into the kitchen and make something because if I don't eat I'll die. Michelle goes into the kitchen and makes something because she's having a blast.

Michelle's new blog and business is/are called Kickin' It in the Kitchen. She offers workshops so we can all learn to enjoy making meals (even me). My favorite thing Michelle does is called "Scrounge" (#5 on the workshops list). When you think your cupboards are bare, give her a call. She'll come to your house and show you how to whip up a fabulous meal with the bits you've got hanging around in the pantry. And she's all about fresh foods.

This? This is some sort of fabulous Greek yogurt dip (traditional, Michelle says). See the note pad? She's making this up as she goes along, and jotting it down. I'd expect this ambrosial concoction will be a recipe on the website soon.

Michelle is the featured foodie this week on Hometown Pasadena's Mangiamo. You can bet I was over at her place when she was putting together the recipe she shares there for Greek Avgolemeno Soup. I like to help when I can.

Obviously she's not having any fun.

I'm much like you, but with a little bit of desire to be more like Michelle. I don't achieve it very often, but on those days when cooking is fun, I can see what all the fuss is about.

Well, personally, I think this is one of your best posts! Thanks for being such a ray of sunshine, Petrea!

Adele, everyone has their calling. I wouldn't be surprised if Michelle had several.

Hi Michelle! (Speaking of rays of sunshine.) I hope everyone checks out your soup recipe and your blog. And your workshops!

Can't say that I like cooking as much as Michele...but I enjoy it much more since I've been retired than when I was working!

It makes a difference to have the time, doesn't it, Chieftess?

Michelle's blog is great and the recipes so far look delicious! I'd love to take one of her workshops, especially if I could end up loving to cook as much as she does. My cupboards and fridge are extremely bare (although she could probably come up with something delicious made with oatmeal, plain yogurt and Bailey's), but I'd love to have Michelle help me figure out how to make fresh versions of the Trader Joe's frozen items I'm addicted to!

This is inspiring!!!! I am rubbish at setting time aside to cook let alone 'creating' like Michele. Maybe tomorrow :). Nice post, Petrea.

Katie, my mouth waters at what Michelle could do with oatmeal, plain yogurt and Bailey's.

LOL, what happens to us is we have our noses in our work, and around 6:30 or so we realize we're hungry. All the things we were ambitious to cook earlier in the day don't seem so important when we've just gotta eat.

Michelle has changed the way that my family eats! I highly recommend her workshops. Love your blog, Petrea!

this will shock you "SHOCK" - but I know what she's making and how to make it. Greek yogurt, a squeeze of lemon, sea salt, dill, garlic

Welcome, griffithzoo. That is high praise!

You're right, PA, I am SHOCKED.

What's her phone number and how quickly can she come round? My mind's blank and my pantry's pretty bare since I checked all the sell by dates. But it just so happens that I have all the ingredients for the Avgolemono soup, so tonight's meal is going to be very tasty. The Greek dip will be on the menu for tomorrow (thanks for the recipe, PA), and I've bookmarked Michelle's blog. Great photos, by the way.

I'm glad you saw this, Desiree. You're the one other person I know who can cook this way.

How fortunate, Bellis! I think all the info is on her blog.

Well, now I'm feeling guilty about getting takeout tonight. I do usually cook.

I love take-out.

What a fun post! Great photos! I don't do much cooking right now, but Michelle's blog may inspire me to do more (when I have time).

Petrea Burchard said...

She makes it look easy, doesn't she, Ms M? Not only that, she makes it look like it's more fun than chocolate and red wine.

I agree about the calling. What a gift to be able to cook like this. Funny that I told my husband only yesterday that I should take a cooking class. Hmmm...

Petrea Burchard said...

Hmm! I'd say check her out. She's got something for everyone.

Ohhhh...Petrea...them's fightin' words....there's nothin' better than fine chocolate and a good red wine!!!

That's a sign of true talent, cooking without cookbooks (and having fun while at it!) I'm more on the cook-when-have-to side of the fence, though wouldn't mind being more like her.
