Mycology, Anyone?

I get all my big words from my husband.

Mycology is the study of fungi. To get a close-up of this yellow burst of fungal joy I had to poke my camera under a cyclone fence. I left some of it in the photo for scale, and you can see its shadow manifested in lines on the puffy, yellow, mushroomy, whatever-it-is. You know I googled. All I got was yellow fungus.

Any ideas?

A really nice photo! I like the contrast of the geometry of the fence with the organic forms of the fungi. Nice colors as well!

No idea but it's pretty! Here in France you can take mushrooms and fungi to the pharmacy and they will identify it for you.

Funny, it seems like pop corns :)

We have these at the stable too. I think they may be edible, but I'm not going to find out.

WV: Emaciatee. It might emaciatee me.

K, if you ate it, you would then be the emaciatee. "… meet your emaciater," etc. Fortunately, I attended a combined linguistics/botany lab school in juvie.

It might be Chicken of the Woods, which apparently tastes a bit like chicken - want to give it a try?

Maybe send the photo to Christopher Nyerges. He runs the School of Self-Reliance in Eagle Rock (among other things) and he is a wild foods expert.

Good pt, Greg. Of course, CN has probably eaten so many things over the decades that wood kill a normal person, but not him, that he wood say, "Of course, it's safe to eat!. Go ahead, taste the goodness of nature!"

(I wood read the small print before you eat)

Thank you, Shanna.

Jilly, what a cool idea! Here the pharmacists are overwhelmed with insurance red tape. I would guess they don't have time even if they have the ability.

Italo, it definitely looks like fun food!

This isn't too far from the stables, Karin. On the upper path south of JPL, near the houses that line the Arroyo.

And Karin, you see where I get my tendency to make grammatical corrections. I had thought it was from my mother. Maybe that's so and I've just gone and married her. Damn, I tried so hard not to do that.

Bellis, "Chicken of the Woods" made me laugh! As you know, you can have "Chicken of the" anything.

I've heard of Christopher N., Greg. I just checked out the website. He's got a nice blog, too. It's linked at the top. He seems to be a man who can envision the land as it was before us.

As for eating "the goodness of nature," I'd trust CN's opinion as I would trust yours about the cafes of the SGValley, Cafe. The opinion and stomach of one who's been there and done that are the best way to tell.

Thanks, P, for your undying trust in my taste buds.

Now, when R U gonna give us your next coffeehouse review?

"Yellow fungus" is as close as this city-boy wants to get to that stuff.

Petrea Burchard said...

As soon as I can, Cafe. I enjoy doing those.

K, we American kids were taught not to eat mushrooms because they might be poison. But could we be missing out? I like the French method, per Jilly's comment.

They are such a nice lemony color -- most of the ones I see around here are shades of brown. Maybe they taste like lemon pepper chicken :)

None. What. So. Ever.

But I have a mushroom to post too, looks nothing like that and have no idea what it is.

Cool though...
