Another Huntington Surprise

We're in the Associated Foundations Teaching Greenhouse at the Huntington Library and Gardens. (Apparently we slept here.) This, uh, item is on the top of the shelf pictured in yesterday's photo.

Any guesses?

You probably know what it is but I haven't a clue.

They're seeds, Petrea. Around here I'd say they were the center of a big sunflower, but out there, where you have so many different things, I couldn't say what specied it'd be.

I'm guessing a sunflower head also. Look at the amazing patterning of the seeds - the Fibonacci series at work.

On second thoughts, maybe I'm wrong about Fibonacci.

Put down a third vote for sunflower, Petrea, though it's a far bigger one than I've ever managed to grow.

I googled and I found one that looks like it.. Mammoth sunflower:

am I right?

I am impressed. I was clueless.

Think Bellis is right about Fibonacci, too.

I thought it was a hat. Not really, but that thought did pop into my head. Perhaps a sunflower seed hat? In other words, no clue.

You are all very knowledgeable, right down to the Fibonacci reference. I googled Fibonacci, then clicked on "images," and look what comes up:

Though it would make a fine hat.

Does a certain someone have access to THAT sunflower head; as in PLEASE get me some seeds?

Looks like some sort of dried sunflower to me.

PA, it's been a while since my visit to the Teaching Greenhouse, which I made with that Someone. Seeds may or may not be there anymore.

Birdman, you're a better man than I am. I would like to become more educated in these matters without having to take the time. But seeds, of all things, take time.

My first thought was a giant mushroom/toadstool...but I think sunflower fits better!

Next time you go there...take a print of this shot and find out what it is!!! We all want to know!!!

Margaret said...

Well I thought it was some wispy thing or a musical instrument.

Petrea Burchard said...

Oh, posterity! I hardly ever print my shots. There are a few I'd like to print, Chieftess, but probably not this one...

It's a wispy thing, Margaret, you are correct.
