We Are Young

Our birthday party yesterday was grand. Many of Pasadena's well-loved dignitaries were there for the synchronized cake-cutting. We had music, classic cars, booths starring local businesses, face painting--all the fun stuff.

But the star of the party was the cake. Uh, cakes. Seven cakes.

Everyone who was willing to stand in line got a piece. I'm too impatient, and I'll bet I'm not the only one.

Mmmm … cake.
Looks like that little kid's dreams are about to come true … if the other guy behind the cake doesn't snarf it all first.

Lovely.

My tongue would be hanging out, too, waiting for a taste of that monumental cake.

The longing in that little boy's face is priceless. Have to admit the cake looks mighty tempting.

If the photographers jostling for position were any indication, that boy got his picture posted in more than one place.

Petrea, how was this event publicized?

I didn't know about it until I read about it on your blog...

Dive's right, the other kid looks like he'll get there first. It's a great photo - the cake looks even better than it did in real life. I couldn't wait for the synchronized cutting, who did it? The only VIP I spotted was Chris Holden.

Hi Anon,
I receive a lot of email from publicists, so I knew about it that way. But I'm sure it was in the Pasadena Star-News and Pasadena Now, as I saw the editors of both publications there yesterday. I also saw it in Hometown Pasadena.
Pasadena's new Public Information Officer has been on the job only a couple of weeks and his hands are full. The previous PIO had assistants but, due to budget cuts, I understand the new guy is on his own.

Bellis, I remember the Mayor, councilpeople Terry Tornek and Holden and Steve Madison, Phyllis Currie from PDP (who I understand has just received a Washington appointment! Wow!) and I believe the police and fire chiefs. I was put off by the push of photographers (I would never make it in the news business) so I backed off and missed that photo op by choice.

The Synchronised Cake-Eating looks like it's about to start quite soon!

It was in my Tournament of Roses column, too...

This is a great shot. I didn't get very good shots of the cake cutting, I only have a snapshot camera and I am just too short. Plus lots of big media there--KTLA, KABC, etc.

Petrea, there weren't lines at the two tables on the upper patio. I got my cake, which was surprisingly good (I'm not much for store-bought cakes). I stopped at one and went home.

If anyone wants to read more about the cake and the party, I'll be posting stories today on Examiner.com

Whhhahhhh!!! Looks like it was a fun party!!! And all that yummy cake!!! If it was chocolate, I'd be waiting in line!!!

Search "tournament of roses" Monteros (use the quotation marks) and you'll find Laura's column.

Rath, I don't know how synchronized it was but there was plenty of cake eating!

Chieftess, I don't know what flavor it was but of course it was chocolate, it had to be, what else could it be?

Your photo of the boy longing for cake (probably mostly the icing) made me laugh. Sounds like a splendid party.

I'm glad you chose this photo op. Those little faces are the best. I imagine they would have waited as long as it might take!

Happy Birthday, Pasadena. We are all Pasadenans today.

Now you are just rubbing it in that I didn't get cake.

Margaret, did I mention that I didn't get cake either?

That little boy wanted so badly to stick a finger into the icing.

Good time?

My favorite part was sneaking away from the crowd and going inside the Curtin house. I've never been inside there before. It's not as fancy as the Fenyes mansion, but I liked it. A woman there had been entertaining the children--leading art projects and face painting. She showed me the pantry. It looks like everything else on the first floor is storage. The second floor continues to be the private residence of a woman who once worked for the Fenyes and Curtin families.

The cake was like last year's "tuxedo cake", only with better flavor. A layer of chocolate, white buttercream, layer of white cake, and white frosting.

I bake a lot of cakes, and store-bought cakes are usually to airy for me, but this was really delicious.

Mmmmmmmm, good to know.
