I think I've mentioned before that I take an excursion (I excurse) to Hollywood once a week for a voice-over job. It is a delight, a great job. I'm fortunate to have it.
Around the corner from where I record at Bell Sound Studios is the Hollywood location of Anawalt Lumber at 1001 N. Highland Avenue. I've long wanted to take a picture of their elephant. I haven't had the opportunity, though, because I always forget the elephant until I'm in the car, and traffic doesn't stop long enough at this corner (this is the Romaine St. side of the building). Yesterday, though, lucky me! The guy in front of me just couldn't get a break to turn onto Highland Avenue, so I got to take a quick pic.
I believe the elephant is the Anawalt logo. This one's nicely done, though I'm worried about the future of his tusks.

I was on Highland yesterday... btw what was the cross street for this elephant? If he was south of Melrose then I missed him. I like how he happened to be positioned between the two cut palms...

Wonder what the connection is between the stylized elephant logo and their company - why they chose it...
Here's an interesting blurb from their website, but it sheds no light on the logo:
Anawalt Lumber is one of the last family-owned and operated lumber companies in Los Angeles. Our main location in West L.A. was opened in 1923 amid lima bean fields, when neither Pico nor Sepulveda Boulevards were paved roads.
Another puzzler is the Anawalt Lumber and Hardware Company, also family-owned, that has been in Montrose since 1921. I've never noticed an elephant there, but...

It's a delightful elephant, in full gallop. I guess the connection with lumber is that elephants were used by loggers in Asia. Thailand's banned it now, so elephant herders from Burma have moved to Thailand to give rides to tourists. I was alowed to ride without a saddle on my elephant and took it for a bath in the river.
Hopefully, the cruel days when baby elephants were captured in the wild and trained for lumbering are over.
This is on Romaine at Highland, Kalei, three blocks north of Melrose. If you're heading north, look to your left. Heading south you won't see it.

It's a long-time, family-owned business, right in the middle of LA.
I don't know why they chose the elephant, Betsy, but while researching I came a cross a statement that the logo may refer to gentle strength--an elephant being a non-vicious animal with the power to move lumber. But I couldn't tell you where I read that.

Yeah, gotta love the old-time family businesses. They've got Home Depot in the suburbs, but LA has Anawalt and that's something for the suburbs to envy.

There is something so adorable about elephants, and, this one looks so happy. You can almost hear it thinking "Wheeeee!"
Also, thanks for the reminder about nouns and verbs. Now I wanna excurse, too.
I don't suppose "excurse" will be a real word until we made it so, LGreen, so I'll dedicate myself to inserting it into the vernacular. English teachers will revile me.
