Last night, John, cast and crew shot a promo at our house for the We Make Movies Kickstarter effort.
When John and I had been married only a few months, we shot a short film at the house we were renting in Altadena. We swore we would never shoot in our own home again.
So anyway, last night's shoot gave make-up artist Kelsey Boutte a chance to try out ways to make actor Karen Zumsteg look dead. Our bathroom became the make-up trailer, which worked out fine except I had to go to the neighbors' to pee.
You'll have to see the movie to find out if, in full make-up and lighting, Karen really looks dead or not. When the promo's ready, I'll provide the link and you can see John, acting, in our own home. One day, when we have the big budgets, maybe we'll shoot at your house!

WOnderful photo, I love the look of concentration on the make-up artist's face. Her work seems pretty convincing!
I look forward to seeing the promo in due course. Do keep us posted!
Coincidently my post today is also about a short film being shot. I hope you enjoy reading about it if you have the time.
I'm glad you succumbed, Petrea - it's such fun to have a little glimpse behind the scenes of movie making. And I'll look forward to seeing the end result soon. {Did Boz do a sweep for dust bunnies beforehand?}
Can't wait to see it!. BTW, my neighbor had a horror story where she got paid to have her house used for a movie.. She was away during that time and came back to find her backyard destroyed by the crew- grass, flowers, etc... and the amount given included damages... let's just say no amount of money made her feel better...I hope all crews aren't inconsiderate?
Drive veeeeery carefully, P...
And the rest of you - get your hands in your pockets and fund this movie! You don't risk anything unless they get the full funding on Kickstarter
I'd say Karen is well on her way to looking skeletal. How fun to be part of movie making. Look forward to the promo.
Nathalie, I left a link on your blog to the 48 Hour Film Project. I think your filmmakers might be part of it. Their excitement is infectious.
Boz did his sweep for foodie bits. I don't think he has much interest in dust or things would look different around here. But a film set is not a good place for a dog who wants to meet everyone and be part of the action, at least if he's not written into the scene. So while they were setting up I took him for a long walk.
I've heard horror stories like this and it does happen, which is why you should make sure they pay you well and have a lot of insurance when you allow a crew to shoot on your property. But our crew was respectful and hardly left any mess at all.
JB, I am destitute that I can't comment on Wordpress blogs right now. I wrote to them and I hope they get back to me and fix it.
They're going to get the full funding, yes yes yes! I hope people will pledge knowing that their money is going to create the newest crop of independent filmmaking talent.
Bayside, I've been in the industry a long time and some parts of it are tiresome. But the work itself doesn't get old.
Gave me a bit of a shock when I opened PDP this morning. Thought you'd had an accident! Hope they give Boz a walk-on part.
Boz wanted very much to audition, but the film is already cast.
If I were producing a movie, I'd definitely want you in my corner. Good, good luck with this.
Very cool photo (even if it's a little bit disturbing to see Karen's transformation). Fun to get an insider's glimpse of how (and where!) the magic happens. And I agree with Away that it's worth helping to fund this great Kickstarter project. Even giving a small amount will get you on the inside track to receive update emails, etc. Join the fun!
South Pasadena has a lot of filming done in their town...and people love it...of course part of the reason is their Film liason...Joan Aguado...she is a city employee designated to work specifically with the film crews while filming in SP...she makes sure they do what they're supposed to!!! When I was living in Glendale, a woman came to my door from Criminal Minds...she was interested, but it never actually happened...darn!!! I think it would be fun...I'm not sure I'd go completely away during the shoot though...someone's gotta make sure they're doing what they're supposed to!!! (we don't live in SoPas)
Thank you, Karin.
I hope people go to Karen Zumsteg's link to see how pretty she is. Heavy make-up and prosthetics require patience and hard work on the part of both actor and make-up artist.
I wouldn't leave my place to a crew, either, Chieftess. Yes to John and his friends, because John cares about our house as much as I do. But no to a bunch of people I don't know. Shooting happens less on streets with palm trees, did you know that? They scream southern California.
That is a really cool picture. I hope that is the closest you come to having a dead body in your house,
that's one of the reason's So Pas is such a popular place to film...it looks like it can be just about anywhere...depending on what spot you pick!!!
Excellent photo of a "work in progress". The film sounds exciting! Best of luck to all with it (and no broken legs :-) )
Me too, Margaret. Ever, ever, ever.
Thank you, Ms. M.
This is all very exciting. I love the creative buzz around this movie-making effort. You are an excellent publicist.
Thanks. I want to share my excitement and let people know what John's doing. I'd love for people to contribute to the kickstarter effort if they can. Then again, I know how it feels when someone's selling to me and I feel pushed. So hopefully people know that option's available and if they can't or don't want to contribute they can still enjoy the story of WeMakeMovies and what John and his group are doing. I think movies are going this way, same as music and publishing.
Thanks for supporting WMM! :)
Hi Allie! It's my pleasure.
I just kicked in a few bucks. I feel like a movie mogul in the making!
YOU MOGUL! Oh now we are very excited. Thank you, Susan. I think John has already sent you a note. He beat me to the thanking.
