Theme Day: Photo of the Year 2011

Happy New Year! It's a big day here on Pasadena Daily Photo, because not only is it a theme day, it's also PDP's birthday. As of today, I've been doing this for four years.

I am insane.

I choose this photo as my Picture of the Year because it was popular, not just with commenters but with me, too. I like the happy, nostalgic world it shows. Funny--that world actually exists on my block. I called the post The Treasures on Your Block based on a series of books by Ann Scheid about Pasadena's residential architecture.

In my mind, there were other contenders for photo of the year, among them:
Hahamongna Upset Overturned
Unruly Posse
A Stubbornly Persistent Illusion
Bulgarini
A Pattern to Follow

If you have other favorites I don't mind if you mention them.

City Daily Photo has a theme day the first of every month. We're now 1436 blogs strong! The newest member is My 365 Manhattan.
Many CDP blogs participate in theme day. Click here to check out those that do.

And thank you for your visits. You're the reason I do this, which sounds like I'm saying "you make me insane." But of course that's not what I mean. I only mean you justify my insanity, and for that I'm grateful.

Ah, such great photos, Petrea.
Thank you for making 2011 a little less sucky and a whole lot better to look at.
Have a wonderful 2012.

There's such a wonderful atmosphere in this shot. Love that fuzzy background and the beautiful gramophone.

I like all of your other choices but agree with you that this photo is the best - technically it is so pleasing. The framing, the colour, that fuzzy depth of field. Excellent! Wishing you both and Boz the best of New Year's and thank for your blog visits over the year. Big hug Jilly xxx

Happy New Year and Happy PDP Birthday. Many, many to choose from, but I'm a sentimentalist, so my favorite features Teddy Butt.

Happy New Year, everyone! I didn't even drink last night yet for some reason I needed to sleep in. Thank you for all your nice messages.

A few quick responses:
Mister Earl, you see Jilly has identified the contraption for you: it's a gramophone.

Hiker, I love pictures Teddy Butt, too. Here's a shot we both liked from 2010:

Congratulations for your 4. Great choice for the theme day. It's very nostalgic to se in front the LP and in the background the children playing. Happy New Year!

I vote for "Hahamongna Upset Overturned" that one goes the extra distance.

Happy New Year to you and yours. 4 years? yes -insanity (and your not the only one)

The nice thing about the picture that it's not only about the gramophone - those blurry figures in the background what really make it.

Are you taking pictures of the parade? That's today, right?

Congrats on 4 years - truly amazing. What record are you playing??? I have records and no player; too bad I didn't live closer. Happy New Year!

Petrea Burchard said...

Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone!

PA, I like that one too, it was creative and fun to do.

Vanda, the parade's tomorrow. Tournament of Roses is "never on a Sunday" so when the first is on Sunday, the parade's on Monday.

Slim, it was probably Sinatra!

Like many of your photos this one has not only harmonious composition, color, depth, but the human story behind the facade. As soon as you look at it, the fantasy switches on.
Happy 2012, Petrea!

That is a very solid photo. LP's are a great link to the past. Yes I still have my Bang & Olufson turntable that I bought back in 1978. Happy New Year!

I loved your photo too - I checked your contenders and I believe your choice was the best. I love the spirit in it and the blurry people in the background. It has nostalgia and daily life all packed in one.
