A Likely Pairing

Journey House is one of those grand, old Pasadena homes with gorgeous woodwork and Craftsman touches. It's a comfortable giant, with old growth trees and a big yard. But those things aren't what make it special.

What's special is its mission "...to assist emancipated foster youth over eighteen years of age to meet their initial independent living needs, to access adequate and appropriate housing, education, and employment, and to build their self-esteem through personalized attention and positive outreach services."

When kids in the foster system reach age 18, they're no longer eligible for care. Once they're emancipated (which is supposed to mean "freed from bondage," a poor choice of words for an 18-year-old who's expected to suddenly be a grown-up), nearly 25% of them will "experience homelessness" within 6 months. Journey House walks with them through the steps to higher education, jobs, adulthood--helps them learn to be on their own instead of tossing them out and hoping for the best.

On the Journey House website you can read about these young adults and the phenomenal hurdles they've had to overcome. You'll be moved and inspired.

The Women's City Club will hold an Evening of Food and Wine to benefit Journey House this Friday, October 14th, with a special appearance and book signing by one of our previous guest authors, Cherie Twohy!

For tickets or to make a donation, call Donna Chaney at 626-768-0080 or Kathryn Fitzgerald at 626-449-8433. Or you can email wccpas@sbcglobal.net.

The Women's City Club often aids worthy Pasadena organizations. Journey House is a fine choice on which for them to lavish their attentions.

*****

Boy, that sentence sounds wrong. I'm sincere, I mean it and it may even be correct. But it seems like I have too many prepositions or they're in the wrong order or something. Unfortunately, the Women's City Club doesn't offer grammar classes and I'm not eligible for Journey House assistance. But that's okay. The important thing is for attention (and donations) to be lavished upon Journey House, thereof which upon receipt good use will be made therein.

This sounds like a fantastic venture. An investment in young adults to guide them into becoming productive citizens is refreshing. Bravo! Thank you Women's City Club for this fundraiser. And the addition of the lovely and talented Cherie Twohy is the icing on the cake.

Bravo to this group! Imagine being 18 and navigating through all of this on your own, with no safety net.

I could not have done it alone at 18, even after having the advantage of growing up with my own family. I was not prepared. The more funds raised for and by Journey House, the more kids they can help.

Ten years in Pasadena, and I had never heard of this wonderful place before. It's such a worthwhile cause, and I'm grateful that the Women's City Club is raising funds to support it.

You chose an interesting angle for your photo.

You chose some lovely light in the conditions of which to take your photo, Petrea. Journey House does indeed sound a fantastic and thoroughly worthwhile enterprise. I do hope the kids they look after are taught grammar of such an adventurous style as that which you so splendidly use here.

When in the course of human events it bcomes necessary for me to parse that, Dive, I'lll consult with my wife.

Bellis, I chose this angle because although the front of the house is gorgeous there are light poles and street signs and I just couldn't get what I wanted.
I think one reason you didn't know this house was there is because it fits just fine in the neighborhood without any problems. I think I'll eventually do a post about the different kinds of special homes in my area of northwest Pasadena that integrate so beautifully into the neighborhood. We have a lot of different kinds and they are good neighbors.

I know it will, Chieftess.

I usually agree with you, Dive, but on the grammar I must respectfully disagree. We want these kids to make it in this world, and I'm afraid if they learn the grammar that upon which to I referred, no one will understand them herein.

JS, I'll help you parse any time you like, hereupon.

Ah, grammar be darned! That was pure Mickey Cohen.

I had to look him up, Laura. What a character. Interesting that you mentioned him, as his life of crime started at a young age. Maybe if he'd had a place like Journey House...

Lovely photo! Sounds like a great program. And I enjoyed the grammar-antics, particularly those within the comments herein. :-)

You're like me, Ms. M. You do your blog visiting in the evening. I wonder if you follow too many blogs, like I do? I'm way behind.

Ms M said...

Yes, I do most of my blog visiting in the evening b/c I'm at work during the day, where, amazingly enough, they want me to actually work instead of visiting my blog friends :-)
