Vintage Altadena

Ah...ah...ah...

Ah...

Ahhcross the street from Tangles and Locks, you'll often see these babies parked in all their vintage glory (and I do mean glory) at what is now called Paulie's Service Station. (Used to be Ronnie's Automotive. Enlarge the top photo to see the Ronnie's sign.)

I went back and forth about whether or not to blur the license plates, which I usually do for privacy's sake. But if you own one of these babies, when your plans require you to go incognito, you take the other car.

I'm not a car freak. I don't ordinarily call cars "babies." But ahh...

I am an amateur car-freak, & I can say, without equivocation, that if those two ever hooked up ('cause, trust me on this, that Corvette is female), their offspring would not resemble the erzatz, retro, fatassed abominations which Detroit has, in its paucity of imagination, fielded of late.

Boy, typing that wore me out.

I believe the long time owner of the station, George Lewis sold it in 2009. The latest station name "Paulies" is from a Progressive auto insurance commercial.

For some reason, they never repainted it to Ronnie's when they were done filming. (The film folks are usually pretty good about restoring property back to it's original condition, so perhaps the new owner wants it this way?).

This location is used for lots of film and photo shoots.

One of the opening scenes for Transformers 2 (Car lot where the hero buys the car) was shot here.

There used to be some antique Gilmore gas pumps here too, but I haven't seen them recently.

So now you're running a porn blog, Petrea?
Okay, where do I sign up for more of this stuff?

I am so not a car person, however, those are quite pretty and my favorite color. If I was ever to be filthy rich and have the money for a sporty car it would definitely be vintage and red.

How do they make them gleam so?!! What stunners!

This is also right across the street from the Coffee Gallery, which is in the same building as Tangles and Locks. I think you said that DL owns one of these cars. As a kid, I always wanted a Corvette from that era, before they changed the back end. If you like these cars, you should go to the annual Glendale Cruise Night next Saturday night on Brand Blvd. Many, many classic cars, plus some great live music, this year featuring Paul Revere and the Raiders (sans Mark Lindsey).

Paucity protest poetry from JS, thank you. I agree, even Beemers look like Camrys, and Camrys look like everything else. When someone waves at me as they drive by I wave back, though usually I have no idea who they are based on the car they drive.

Thanks for the inside info, Steve R. The one thing I can add is that the gas pumps went away when the new owner came.

Dive, thank you, now the blog will have extra clicks today.

You and me, Gina, drag racing up Lake Avenue.

Shell, I will tell you how they make them gleam. DL moved the Mustang into place as I watched. Then, when he saw fingerprints on the Corvette (I had not noticed them in the glare of the gleam), he pulled a chamois from in his pocket and buffed the fender gently by hand. The 'vette is his and the Mustang is owned by the other hairdresser at Tangles and Locks, to whom I was introduced but whose name I promptly forgot.

You can also see the Coffee Gallery/Tangles and Locks building reflected in the first photo.

Glendale Cruise Night looks like fun, Mister Earl. If you ask me, though, Paul Revere and the Raiders without Mark Lindsay is like, um, the Raiders. Except one of the men in the group is named Paul Revere.

I think if I owned those cars, they'd be a source of constant worry.

… yeah, to other drivers—that's the whole point.

black and gold license plates to blue and gold plates. "Gold" as in the Golden State. I wonder why we removed the colors. Who decided?

Petrea Burchard said...

I always thought you could request the black and gold plates as a special thing for a vintage car.

I was hoping Dive would make a car porn comment. And I agree with him. Those are a set of beauties that you are showing us.

Mark Lindsay is the most under-rated vocalist of my music era.

Utterly snazzy!

Ha ha, Steven.

Des, I bet you've seen these before. And you know snazzy when you see it.

You are right, Karin. I think you need to have lots of big garages, and private parking spots, and always have a chamois with you. Would make me worried too.

Speaking of license plates... "60 Ways.." to leave your lover? I thought that was 50 ways?

Before reading about Tangles and Locks in your last post and before reading Mr. Earl's comment, I recognized the Coffee Gallery in the reflection. How fun is that?! Well, I thought it was fun.

Everybody needs a hobby, Mister Earl.

I suppose you could do a lot of things 60 ways, Steve.

Altho I'm not a car-freak, I enjoyed seeing these beautifully kept vintage autos. The red is gorgeous!
Great photos!

If these cars were blue they wouldn't have half the impact.

Thanks to Timothy Rutt. I never would have found it on my own.
