April 23rd

It's Shakespeare's birthday. I thought I should say "Happy Birthday, Will!" seeing as we--okay, I--so ill-used him on the blog merely a week ago.

It's also St. George's Day in the United Kingdom. From what I understand it's not exactly a big deal on that precious stone set in the silver sea, but it makes a good excuse to go to the pub. Luckily, this year the day of St. George (who wasn't British and never set foot on the sceptred isle) falls on a Saturday, because the day of Britain's patron saint is not a holiday. But Happy St. George's Day to our British friends nonetheless.

I didn't have any pictures of dragons, or knights, or even pubs for that matter. But I'm a sucker for an archway.

Miguel de Cervantes (inventor of beer, I believe. Or was that Bud Cerveza?) also

Psst. His birthday's 26 April. 23 April was his snuff-it day..

And quite an unusual arch setting it is.
Really, you have no pictures of dragons or knights? Petrea, you really must come for a visit and fill that lacuna.
Wow, there are so many special days falling on this April 23. May it be a good one for you.

That's a cool archway. You must know all the best spots in Pasadena.

GIno, Bill & Mickey Cervantes all in one? April is the coolest month.

I can definitely imagine a princess beyond this beautiful arch. Maybe not waiting for George to save her from a dragon though. I'm no Shakespeare scholar, but I do have his free app on my ipod Touch so I couldn't resist searching for "arch". I found a nice quote from a work I'll admit I've never heard of called Cymbeline. Jachimo says, "What, are men mad? Hath nature given them eyes to see this vaulted arch and the rich crop of sea and land ..."

Hello, This is Belgium, and welcome!

Italo, it's a party!

jb, I love your link. Great shots. Cervantes, too, eh? I had no idea it was World Book Day. Me being a writer and all. But I do know beer goes back further than the 17th century, some archaeologists say people might have been brewing it as far back as the Neolithic (5,500 years ago). I know all this off the top of my Google-head.

If I look through my stuff, Dina, I've probably got a lizard. And I believe there's a suit of armor somewhere, standing outside an antique store.

Hiker led me to this one, Vanda. I just added labels. It's on the grounds of an old school in Altadena that was a house before it was a school.

Hee hee, J. (I sound like a donkey.)

It's an excellent quote, Katie. Cymbeline is rarely performed.

Happy BDay Will! Thank you for Romeo and Juliet... though you could have let them live a little longer...

I recognized it immediately. I think this was the prettiest spot -- or maybe the photo makes it so.

For whatever reason, this photo immediately made me think of an M.C. Escher drawing. Here's a version in Legos:

Hope the horse and all that shining armor can negotiate those arches. But I bet the dragon chasing George won't make it, so it's a good choice of photo for today.

We in England are enjoying the hottest Easter since records began, which is quite extraordinary. It's hotter in Cambridge than in Pasadena, and all the shining knights have temporarily shed their armor so they can sunbathe. Will would have loved it.

Mustn't forget Dyngus Day...

Bellis, I wouldn't doubt if it's warmer in Chicago than it is here. If this goes on much longer, hello, Cambridge Daily Photo!

Phew! Thanks, Diana. I have until Monday to get my pussy willows.

PS jb is SUCH a stickler! HA

JB must be talking about George, or Cervantes. I know the 23rd is George's snuff-it day (it's St. George's Day, after all, not his birthday.

William Shakespeare died on April 23rd, 'tis true. It's thought he was also born on the 23rd, as he was baptised on April 26th.

It's an Escher arch. Something about the perspective

It's St.George's Day?
Who knew?
I had no idea it was Earth Day either. You guys across the pond are so much better at having "days" than we are.
All I know is that it's Easter weekend and that means I'm trapped at home, cursed with living in one of the few truly beautiful and secluded spots in England. The roads are currently gridlocked the streets choked with staring morons as every dumb schmuck in the country has descended on us for a four day weekend, armed with with cameras and caravans and screaming kids and sunburn.
Ack!
Happy St.George's Day, Petrea!

Dina said...

OK, I guess if you enlarge the picture of a lizard it could pass for a dragon.
But I still think you should come here.

Petrea Burchard said...

That's two votes for Escher, PA, so he wins.

Dive, Pasadena celebrated Earth Day last weekend and I missed the publicity, so I'd forgotten it was Earth Day, too. What a day! I promise that if and when we visit your part of the world it won't be a holiday. It might even be cold. No tourists but us.

I think I should, too, Dina. My little history/archaeology brain would just overload with happiness.

Happy belated St. George's Day. Happy belated birthday, Will. Sorry I missed the party.

So where is this gorgeous Escher arch?

Petrea Burchard said...

It's in Altadena, Susan. I could find my way back to it if I studied some maps.

Susan Campisi said...

Perhaps I will stumble upon it as I trek around Altadena with Tommy.
