Real Estate Primer

I read a lot of blogs (too many or not enough, I haven't decided). One I particularly enjoy is Pasadena Real Estate With Brigham Yen. Brigham is full of ideas and enthusiasm for a better Pasadena. He regularly posts about what's going on real estate-wise in town.

I took today's photo from a window in one of the offices of the Pasadena Professional Building at Union and Madison. This empty lot on Union St. is part of the Fuller Theological Seminary Campus. Here's a link to a view from the rooftop when the Herkimer Arms still stood there. That's City Hall in the background.

What's happening with the lot? As usual, Brigham has the scoop. When Fuller Theological Seminary removed the Greene & Greene-designed Herkimer Arms (not destroyed, thanks to preservation efforts, but relocated to Raymond just north of Maple), the Fuller Worship Center was supposed to go in. If you want to know why building hasn't begun, read Brigham's post. After all, it's his scoop.

The restoration of the Herk is on hold too. It's just sitting on that lot with another house, hopefully not deteriorating too much.

I ran across the G&G apt quite by accident. The entire street is lovely, filled with historic gems. But Nick is right, much of the apt itself is covered in plastic. Wonder what the story is.

The building was originally designed by the lesser-known team of Beige & Beige, in 1910, for Saran family of plastic-wrap fame. I think the design's still fresh.

If I had to guess I'd say money. It's all about money this year. Nobody's got any. Raymond Ave is really lovely, though. North of the freeway there are some beautiful old homes.

J, you funny.

Beautiful shot of the new library and our lovely vacant lot! My sources tell me the project is still moving forward, just not as fast as originally intended.

It looks to me like a ship sunk in the lot. That triangular shape ; the bow

Hi Ben! Yes, I think you read Brigham's post where he tells of the funding search. I love his pictures of the model.

My pleasure, Brigham. Looking forward to meeting you in the Real world soon.

I see it, PA. Ben will tell me if I'm wrong but I think that's the roof of the Prayer Garden, sinking in a sea of tan.

@J: If I'm not mistaken, I think Beige & Beige also worked heavily with the Irvine Company in the suburban development of Orange County.

Thanks for all the great photos of Pasadena. I've been following your blog since graduating from Fuller Seminary and beginning doctoral work at Baylor University in Waco, TX, two years ago. My new home town is not nearly as lovely as Pasadena; thanks for helping me stay connected to the city I came to love so dearly!

Hi Josh. Thanks for visiting, I'm glad to know you're checking in. Keep coming back!

In case you don't already know about The Sky Is Big In Pasadena, you might want to check that out, too. Ben's a Fuller student who blogs daily with his own perspective on Pasadena.
