Rainy Day Muse

We had rain yesterday, lovely rain, for the first time in many months. It rained all day and into the night, but reports said it wouldn't be enough to cause landslides. Fingers crossed.

I had the kind of day where I didn't get to practice as much art as I like to. I guess most days are like that. Most days are filled with errands, tasks and work you get paid for (if you're lucky), and usually that work isn't writing the great American novel or performing Shakespeare or poking your camera around pretty gardens.

I mean the "general you." Well. I mean me.

I worked in Valley Village (which is--what?--a nice way of saying "north Sherman Oaks?"--"west North Hollywood?"). When I left there I took the freeway to an appointment in La Canada Flintridge. It was (appropriately) along the stretch of the 134 that runs between Disney Studios and Forest Lawn Cemetery that I had an inspiration. My muse came to me and said something brilliant, and I said, "Could you jot that down for me, please? I'm driving in the rain here." She laughed and disappeared. Haven't seen her since.

It'll come back to me.

I pulled over and took the photo of Lupe's Place in La Canada Flintridge because that bright orange table looked forlorn in the rain. Look what's next door to Lupe's. You can see it just beyond the sign in the other picture. My muse is mocking me.

Margaret, this photo's for you.

Dive and I send brilliant blue skies from Paris! Magpie's Grill reminds me of the awful ad for Quick Hamburger restaurant I've been seeing that is having fun with the play on words between goût and goo -- they're calling it GooGrille. Yuk!

Oh, how wonderful, Petrea!! I hope we have some rain tomorrow, as we've had another dust bowl today. Snort.

{Yay, hi to you and Dive and blue skies, Katie!}

Now wv has reminded me that I need to finish the preticur I started last night... where's my nail polish?

We have rain here, too. I have to go out for some errands but I like being inside. Already miss sunny days..

I'm not all that sure that Lupe's place is all that fetching on a sunny day, but maybe.......
This rain thing there must be a big deal. Hiker made it sound like you all are getting a nor'easter!!!

The skies should be brilliant blue for you and Dive, Katie. I hope he's loving Paris, and you, of course.

Shell, may you have some of our good luck. I've always wished we could distribute rain around the world where it's needed.

Aysegul, you're the perfect example. I don't think you need more rain, do you? Let's both get our errands done quickly today so we can stay cozy inside.

Ha ha, Virginia. Yeah, rain is a big deal to us any time. Now it's especially important for two reasons: one is the drought we're experiencing and the other is the recent Station Fire. We need rain because of the drought, but not too much, because the lack of vegetation and layer of ash creates a potential mudslide situation.

The local papers and online news stories say only that people are prepared for mudslides. It's still raining lightly but as of now, it looks like everything's okay.

You had a job at Disney?

Oh, nothing so glamorous, Hiker. Paperwork in Valley Village. It was just near Disney that my muse showed up to taunt me.

Did you try Tom Waits's advice for responding to your genius while driving on the LA freeway?

I once bought a hand-held digital recorder to keep in the car for just such inopportune visits of the muse. I could never remember how to work the thing when I needed it in traffic. Sigh.

Maybe if you drove past there again, the muse might revisit you? My muse occasionally appears on long hikes, but by the time I find a notebook, she's gone. Now I've got an iPhone that can take dictation, but I guess if I did that while driving, I'd end up like Maria Shriver.

Linda, I thought of Waits but couldn't remember exactly what he did, which is why I linked to Gilbert's speech. I'm listening to it again right now.

Hee hee, Bellis. Walk the talk, right? (At least don't drive it.) I take a small notebook on every hike. Can't walk and write at the same time, but it's useful.

Well, thank you very much! Your muse is mocking you, but you have eight more so you should still be good.

Hi Margaret. As long as you have muses, I'm happy.

I listened to Gilbert's speech again just now. It's delightful. Every artist will be inspired by it. She talks about Waits at about the 12:30 mark.

That was so funny! I love synchronicity.
I was once showing a painting called Muse of History. It was pictured in ArtScene with the title, Muse of the Street. Was my Muse trying to tell me something?

Lupe's looks stuck in time. That's probably a good thing!

fun to read your musing about your muse :) Maybe the magpie will collect something for your muse...

I think I'm the only one who's been to both Lupe's and Magpie's!!! Lupe's has great food, but the people serving always seem like they would rather be somewhere else, which doesn't deter the clientele as it's always got a crowd at lunch...and Magpie's is pretty basic, decent food, clean but uninspiring inside...no muse's there....

Petrea Burchard said...

PIO, I kind of like the Lupe's look. I'll go back on a sunny day.

Ms. M., maybe a magpie for a muse is better than no muse at all.

Thanks for the reviews, Chieftess. I'll check them out.

Oh and Shanna, I don't know about your muse but somebody needs to tell that editor something...
