Theme Day: Water

Water's a big deal in southern California, and getting bigger. Or should I say smaller? We're in the midst of a drought, and the stuff's getting harder to come by. Pasadena's City Council is projecting a water shortage and has implemented a plan. Well—we're all implementing the plan. At least, we'd better be.

The flood control basins at Hahamongna Watershed Park did their job this spring. Above, ducks enjoy the mountain run-off in a basin south of JPL in a photo I took January 11th.

I took the photo below on March 8th. Easy come, easy go.
178 City Daily Photo blogs are participating in theme day this month. Click on a few and have an adventure!

Goodness, what a difference in those two photographs and really showing us how serious this is. Excellent post for today's theme.

It's amazing to see the difference between the 2 photos! Water is a so presious gift!

Oh my! And this is only April 1st. Too graphic!

quite a contrast

To clarify: a flood control basin is not a year-round body of water; it holds the water until it can be redirected for the city's use. But we used it all up pretty fast!

Wow, what a difference 3 weeks makes! I've never been to this area of Pasadena - I'll have to someday!

let's hope for more rain and a mild summer!

Easy come, easy go indeed!

I hope your ears weren't burning too bad, it was meant playfully.

Good post....it's a problem we share this side of the pacific.

Goodness me! That is a dried up pond! Good choice fro the Theme and thought provoking too.

It makes us realize that we should all do our bit and conserve water.

from cali: Oh, I loved it. I've only seen the pool at the Roosevelt, though. Never been invited to swim...

Sally: Looks like I have a new Oz blog to frequent! Ararat Daily Photo's another favorite, and she had the dry idea today, too.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I'm no authority, but it looks to me like water is fast becoming a rare commodity--not just in California (and Australia) but all over the world. So I agree with you, Ken!

Where do the duckies go?

Petrea Burchard said...

Jim, I could make up an answer but the truth is I don't know. Maybe they fly north for the summer so they can fly south for the winter.

Wow! & I have been complaining about all the rain that is in our forecast this week. I feel differently now & though I conserve I will do even more.
Thanks for the reminder Petrea!
Great post!

These photos remind Louis of the playa lakes that came and went in Louis's native Texas panhandle/south plains. Wet today, dry tomorrow.

Louis forgot to sign up for the theme day - but since his ongoing theme is the San Francisco Bay, peut-être he still followed the theme!

Looks like your water saving measures are the same as ours.
In Ararat we are on stage 4 water restrictions - no watering the lawn, no hosing the garden - although you can bucket water on to it, which has led to a new phenomenon called "bucket back" (especially in old people) - do you have it there?

Petrea Burchard said...

Our restrictions aren't as severe as yours yet, Ararat. We can water lawns at certain hours of the day (just not between 10am and 5pm). What's "bucket back"? I'm sure we'll get to it sooner or later.
