Bookmarks: Guerilla Marketing

This Little Free Library at 3405 Florecita Drive in Altadena invites you to sit down and browse. Sweet, isn't it? I exclaimed out loud when I saw this one, and I didn't even have Boz with me to mask the fact that I was talking to myself. The concept of the Little Free Library is "take a book, leave a book." The "Florecita Farm Little Free Library," erected in honor of Elmer E. Nielson, had a bunch of good ones.

This is the only one in Altadena listed with littlefreelibrary.org, though there might be an unofficial Altadena branch. I promise to investigate. I'll also be checking out the Pasadena branches, as I continue my marketing plan.

In other news, you may remember Anita Davison, the British novelist who kicked off the Saturday Bookmarks series with her book, Royalist Rebel. She invited me to post on her blog, so I wrote about the concept of networking as giving, and the strange circumstances that introduced the two of us. And here's Anita's review of Camelot & Vine, on Historical Novel Review.

  1. Yay! Hoorah for little free libraries! So good to see C&V sitting in pride of place. Someone's going to get a really good read.
You just reminded me: my copy of Royalist Rebel has been sitting on my reading pile for weeks now; it's about time I got around to reading it.

  2. Oh how nice! Mine is on my reading pile, too. We'll have to compare notes. Read the story I wrote for her blog, Dive, you'll be amazed at how we met, and there's a link in there I think you'll love.

  3. A wonderful tribute to the Butterfly and to friendship, Petrea.

  5. I was a lurker for a long time before she died. It really was a great blog. You've done her justice in your piece.

  6. Oh, it's sweet all right! Serendipitous. And Petrea, I had a little cry reading your guest post over at Anita's. I hope Caro somehow had a sense deep down that she touched many hearts.

  7. I think there are a couple in Altadena--I heard about one in The Meadows and another on Mariposa, and The Coffee Gallery also has take-a-book-leave-a-book.

  8. Dive, I didn't know you knew about her! I hope she had a lot of followers.

Shell, it still makes me cry, isn't that funny? I didn't know her. But she did, still does, touch hearts. What a personality!

Laura, I didn't know about the one on Mariposa, do you know where? I'll go guerilla at the Coffee Gallery, too, thanks for the tip.

  9. I love these little libraries!
Enjoyed reading the review of your book by Anita Davison, and the moving piece you wrote on her blog. And of course internet friends are "real" friends :-)

  10. Great post - Yay for the Little Free Library. I love your idea. I'm going to put a copy of C&V in my local LFL!

  11. I was going to do that, Adele, but feel free. Let's discuss.

  12. I noticed a copy of Camelot & Vine in our library this weekend! Also, there are a couple of new LFLs in Pasadena, too. One is on Highland and the other, not on the map yet I think, is on Mar Vista where Atchison dead ends, just a block away from our LFL. Have you been by those? I regularly check on LFL's Flickr page to see the newest libraries.

  13. Hi Christy! I should have known you'd catch it, you take good care of your Little Free Library. I haven't been by the new ones, but I'll check them out. Thank you!

(Christy's LFL, which is not currently wearing its Halloween costume, is at Atchison and Catalina in Pasadena. http://bit.ly/Yp4UqN)

  14. It's hard not to gush over these little free libraries. They're charming. I've yet to see one in person. Thank you for turning me onto them! One of these weeks I'm going to take a vacation in Altadena/Pasadena so I can explore all the gifts we have in this area.

I remember reading about how you and Anita met. So poignant...

  15. This LFL is but a dog walk away from you, Susan. I'll send you a map.

  16. Nevermind, it's further than I thought.

  17. Yeah, I'd already checked Google maps. I wonder if I could get to Florecita Drive from Canyon Crest Road. Might have to drive the first time to check that out.
