Der Sandmann

Yay! Blogger's been down for a while (I guess we all know) and now it seems to be back. Enough said about that.

I never miss an opportunity to roam the CalTech campus, and last night I had the opportunity to attend a film there. The film is Der Sandmann (The Sandman), directed by Peter Luisi, who attended the screening and answered questions.

I'm not a reviewer but I'll tell you this much: Der Sandmann is realistic and absurdist at the same time, an absolute delight, and you must see it if you get the opportunity. What a privilege it was to get to see it in its Caltech premiere.

Update: Now that I'm not hurrying to post and rush out of the house, I'll add that "Der Sandmann" has begun festival rounds in the U.S. and is seeking a U.S. distributor. It ought to have one. Last night's CalTech audience ate it up.

  4. Thanks. Welcome back to us all.

Yes, Daisy, Der Sandmann is --well, I believe it was shot in Switzerland and on Elba (ooh, vacation) and the language is German. I saw it with subtitles, which I much prefer to dubbing.

  5. It's a weird version of German called Swiss, which I can't understand at all. Perhaps not even the Swiss can, which is why they also speak Italian and French.

What a great photo! I love the golden reflection of the sun on the terracotta tiles. It looks like there's a labyrinth through that archway, not to be entered without string or breadcrumbs.

  6. Das Suisse Deutsche!!! (that's about as much as I know...even though my mom's parents both immigrated from Switzerland!)

  7. Oh Well then I have a chance to watch it in theatres... we've got both here: Italian and German! :-)
I also prefer films in the original language!

  8. I see that I anglicized the film's title. Verboten! Make that "Der Sandmann."

  9. Daisy, it stars Fabian Kruger and Irene Brugger. They're perfect in their roles and their chemistry is right-on. I hope you'll get a chance to see it.

Thank you, Bellis. As you know it's not really a labyrinth, but it looks like one from a certain angle.

  10. Yay, you're back! And yay, we're all back. I had a feeling you were having a night out on the tiles, Petrea...

  12. Shell, a Led Zeppelin reference! Well, that's the first thing I thought of, anyway. And they meant what you said. (If I must be out on tiles, these are good ones to be out on, I suppose.)

Thanks, Ms. M. I kind of like this one, too, odd as it is.

  14. Is it in theaters there, Daisy? We don't have it here yet, so I was lucky to see it.
