Locals Only

The skies should be clear for Locals Only Thursday in Old Town. Today's the day to get your shopping done.

Locals Only Thursdays rewards people who live and/or work in Pasadena for spending their money here. And why not? You might as well put money into the economy where it can do you and your city some good. Just show your driver's license or business card at participating businesses on Thursdays during October to receive specials, discounts and/or premiums.

I recommend you check out the link. Some offerings are better than others.

Most clothing stores on the list offer good discounts and perks. There are several decent restaurant bargains, too, although if you ask me, "two free English muffins" isn't nearly as enticing as "$3 martinis, mixed drinks, appetizers and beer." (Is that just me?)

Not all Old Town businesses are participating, so check the link and plan accordingly. There are only so many hours in one shopping day, and you still need to get over to Burke Williams and get 15% off that mani-pedi.

  1. Oh, I love the tones here, Petrea! What a wonderful idea ~ there are some very innovative initiatives over your way. I'd be checking out the discounted pampering treats for sure. Oh, and those $3 martinis sound pretty refreshing.

  2. What a great idea! I love supporting my local businesses and try to do so as much as possible. Pasadena's a lovely place to shop.

  3. Alas, I am too far south to be local.

  4. I really like the coloring of this photo (and the brick). And I want a leaf-print dress like the one on the left! Great idea to shop locally (and for merchants to give a discount to locals). I'll go spend some money in Berkeley this weekend.

  5. Love the photo, Petrea, and the shop local movement! So glad that they got the word out via print ads and on-line. There's a similar promotion going on in Altadena, however, not enough was done to promote it.

  6. Good morning you all, and thanks for your comments! It's just coming on 9am and not a single Pasadenish has commented, so I'm assuming everyone's already in Old Town shopping.

  8. The plaque was the first thing that caught my eye. A committee that included Old Pasadena Management District and the City of Pasadena came up with the idea of the plaques several years ago. Grant funding made the manufacture and installation possible.

Most of the alleyways in Old Pas have such plaques with information about buildings and/or the alleys themselves.

See the summary from the National Register of History Places, including history and descriptions of buildings and alleyways, here:

  9. TD, I suppose Istanbul is too big a city do so such a thing!

Ann, that's a document I'm going to print out and peruse. Thank you. Is the building that stands there the original Salvation Army building? I can't tell by comparing the old photos I have to the one I took, because I didn't get out and look at it from across the street.

  10. When I first saw the picture, I thought it was the Del Mar Salvation Army store. Well, fashions don't change much nowadays, do they? Love the leaf print dress.

Thanks for the alert - I'm off to shop till I drop.

  12. Petrea, since I don't like in Pasadena (shure!) could you put me down for a nice pair of khakis at Banana Republic? 34x30.

  14. Never turn down a free English muffin, Petrea (or two).
Actually, I've been English for 51 years and have never seen, let alone eaten, an "English muffin." I suspect they are an American invention.

  15. Ugh. It's almost Friday so I missed Locals Only Thursday. I'm putting it on my calendar for next week. Thanks for the heads up!

    Great photo.

  16. Next time, V, a bit of shopping and antiquing.

We got it, Steve, still funny. I'm taking orders for next Thursday (not).

  17. Dive, I think the British equivalent is a crumpet. I didn't know enough to order one when I was there, so I have to go back.

Sorry, Susan, I forgot to blog about it last week. I had heard about it from somewhere, but I can't remember where.
