Garage Week: Pair

Our neighbors had to tear down an old garage and build a new one. That old thing was gross. But when you've got a pretty old garage like this, it's more in keeping with Pasadena's preservation mindset to keep it. That mindset is one reason why people come here, and stay.

I don't know what fascinates me about these little buildings. I think it's just that they're old, and people have kept them when they could. If you live in a neighborhood full of new houses, as I have done in the past, you don't get to see these all the time. That's too bad. There's a nostalgia about them.

So ends Garage Week here on the ol' PDP. I already have more garage pics in the queue, so we might do it again. I think I'll check my files and see if I've got enough photos for "Fence Week." Or maybe I'll get more specific and do "Gate Week." Or how about "Porch Light Week"?

Any suggestions?

I've really enjoyed this, PB! Gate light week would be fun, too.

Gate lights are a challenge, but I can try. Plus there's always Leaf Week, and Cement Week.

Up here in snow country, you either have a garage with a door opener, or you don't have a garage and have to dig yourself out every morning...this one would never work!!!

LOL, love the idea of porch light week! I'm guessing you could find very interesting ones:) I like this older one very much. It's got character, as they say, and much potential if the owners go the renovation route!

(You may have seen this - your garage posts made me think of it - a tiny garage converted into a small home in France: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/before-after-old-garage-converted-into-tiny-home-reddit-182995)

I don't think it would be to hard to rebuild the doors and keep the integrity of the model T. The termites have gotten the best of them.

"cement week" ? Hahaha. You're so funny. Garage week is hilarious. You've made me look at garages in the neighborhood and I keep thinking I recognize some that you've photographed but It's not that easy to tell.

I didn't know if anyone would like garages or not, but I'm fascinated by them. Not the generic, modern ones, but all the little (and big) wacky ones we have around here.

I could soooo do "Cement Week."

This was a great theme for the week, Petrea. I, too, love the old garages in Pasadena and Altadena.

Chieftess, in SoCal, we have garages but we never park our cars in them!

I love all the detached, or semi-detached garages around Pasadena. Reminds me of helping my grandfather out in his detached garage. You never know what you'll find when you open those doors. Maybe an old vehicle, running or not. Maybe stacked to the rafters with relics from a time before electricity ran everywhere. Maybe crammed full of stuff that Goodwill won't even take. Perhaps tools as old as my grandfather. Always makes me wonder when I look at them.

Cement week?!?! Really, no! Leaf week, yes. Boz week, yes! Pool week, yes. Nature week, sure. Cement...oh good lord, I think I need a drink just considering heinous crimes of nature like a week of cement blah! ;-) Well, come to think of it, it IS after 5pm here in CA, I guess I'm good to go for a sip of something.

Laura, you wouldn't have known this but Chieftess grew up around here. Imagine adjusting to snow country after that!

Old tools, Trish. Old things that have been there a hundred years. I'm stuck on that stuff.
Let's have a drink and I'll start working on "Dust Week."

I've loved garage week. I guess cars were modeled on horse carriages at first, and garage doors may have been made by stable door makers? A slow transition at the beginning of the horseless carriage era.
How about mail box week? There are some imaginative ones in The Meadows, although that's in Altadena.

Petrea Burchard said...

They haven't kicked me out of Altadena yet!

Ohhh...dust week!!! Now that's one I can get behind!!!

Do them all, all those weeks.

You made me realized I have never had a garage.

Petrea Burchard said...

I don't know if I'll do them all, but I'm likin' the Dust Week idea.

Loved garage week. Let me know when you're ready for part two. We have sliding barn doors on ours.

Petrea Burchard said...

Thanks. I may well do part 2.

Old tools---amen! I'd follow you anywhere if you kept posting pics of tools as old or older than my grandad who would be about 101 right now if he were still above ground.

Dust---ooh, so many options there! I can't wait to see your take on that!

It may be only 8:30a here in CA, but that drink is sounding pretty good. Eh, I've got a lot of work to do today, for sure when I'm done with it though!
