Bookmarks

Today I begin a regular Saturday feature on writing, reading, and books. Not just my books, but also guest authors, libraries, book shops, ideas, writing tips, and fun stuff. I'm just busting to talk about this stuff. I'm calling it "Bookmarks," and I welcome your suggestions.

I won't limit it to Pasadena, though of course I'll include a local photo. (That's the rule, and I obey the rules, most of the time. It's easier to get away with being bad when no one expects it.)

And what better way to kick off this feature than with footwear? Chain mail--or maille--running shoes for the knights of Camelot & Vine. Or maybe not. So much for literature.

Actually, literature is doing fine. The publishing industry is changing, but reading isn't going away. Just like we changed the way we listen to music (I wish I'd kept those LP's), and the way we watch movies (have you seen a VHS tape lately? I don't miss those), we're reading in new ways. TV wasn't the end of the movie business, and ebooks aren't the end of publishing. They're just another way of reading.

I'm keeping my books, though.

For now, enjoy the documentary Bad Writing, streaming free for the month of January only. I owe thanks for the link to Karin Bugge, the excellent writer known as the Altadena Hiker.

That's a big bookmark!

Intriguing idea, looking forward to your posts.

Chain mail can be quite comfortable but I'm not paying $250 for a pair! I paid less than half that for my Brooks and thought it was expensive.

This is going to be fun.

I can't wait!

Dragon, I've never worn chain mail. I'm surprised to hear it's comfortable!

I hope we all have fun with this, not just me. I'm looking forward to what we come up with.

What a great idea, and what a way to kick it off. I don't mind admitting I've watched it, or parts of it, three times already. The generosity, wisdom, humor, and honesty of some really famous writers just floors me.

Thanks, Chieftess. We'll enjoy ourselves, I think.

Karin, thanks for the link to the film. I just finished watching it this morning. Favorite line: "...locked in the basement with a tampon and a duck..."

And speaking of books, it looks like Cliff's Used Books on Colorado is in trouble. All books are on sale for 50% off. It would be sad to lose another used book resource.

Cliff's books is at 630 E. Colorado: http://www.yelp.com/biz/cliffs-books-pasadena

Let's get on over there and spend some cash! This is one of those used book stores piled floor to ceiling with pretty much everything.

Cliff's also has cats - at least the last time I was there in 2002. Every genuine second-hand bookshop has to have at least one cat.I'm puzzled about Battery Books in South Pasadena - where are they?

I'm looking forward to the Bookmarks Saturdays.

Bellis, I took the photo and forgot to write down the name of the store, so I looked it up online. It's directly across from Buster's. Is that not the name of it?

What a fun Saturday feature! I very much enjoyed watching Bad Writing, and I look forward to more things writing-related on future Saturday. One of my resolutions for 2013 is to read more so it will be fun to check in here for ideas!

I haven't made any resolutions, Katie, but maybe I should make a list.

Battery Books must be new - though I haven't walked along Mission for a while. It seems to be getting a better range of shops on the south side.

It sounds like a fun new feature. (You come up with great ideas!)

It might be used books, Bellis. I'll check it out for more photos.

Ms. M, thank you, I'm glad you think so!
