Cold is Relative

How cold does it get where you are?

It got up to 61 degrees Fahrenheit here yesterday, and I know that's warm for this time of year if you live in, say, Fairbanks, or Antarctica, or Norwich. But that's not counting the wind-chill factor. It was so breezy it felt like 55! It gets into the low 40's by the wee hours. Brrr.

There's a pay-off: clear, blue skies and white clouds. Fast clouds, speeding across the mountaintops like puffy space invaders.

Okay, I'm ready to hear about the snow now.

Your midwinter light looks like our March light - so bright!!

Yesterday it was 30F here - today it has jumped to 51 degrees, which is uncomfortably warm for this time of year. Everyone is disconcerted.

It was a balmy 40 Fahrenheit while I was out and about in the city this morning, Petrea. Add in rain and gale force winds and it's about as pleasant as it gets at this time of year; a nice bit of a warm spell before Norway comes visiting again.

It's 11c (52f) at the moment, but very windy. Still, at least the wind is probably keeping the rain from falling! Snow is a bit of a rarity here in Llandudno. Thankfully!

You're absolutely correct -- it's all relative. I'm a big ol' baby, born and raised and ever residing in the balmy air of Southern California, and I'm freezing my hiney off in this nippy weather. It's beautiful though, and I do love the gorgeous crystal-clear skies. Except, oh gee, rain is coming again this weekend. Bah. I prefer the rain to begin in January, but the weather people never consult with me on this. December has been much too rainy for my taste. Sigh. Life is harsh. ;)
My husband is off work this week, so we've been romping around the local environs on our Christmas Vacation, having way too much fun and sneaking in an extra cappuccino now and again at Intelligentsia.
And of course yesterday I had to do my yearly pose on the porch of the Tournament House, just in case the Rose Queen needs me to fill in for her in the event that she comes down with a case of the sniffles or a bout of gastritis. What can I say, I'm a giver. Always willing to step in and lend a hand.
I hope you survive the icy days of our So Cal winter, Petrea. I shall attempt to solider through the rough climate myself. We are brave, no? *snicker*
I'm off to find my thermal socks now...

Every so often we will get some snow- which only lasts a day or so... fluff is what a friend from back East called it... the temps were a little below 24 degrees.. did u ever notice that when it gets that cold, how eerie the air sounds? or rather how quiet it is?
I can take the cold but if u add a bit of wind, that's a killer for me!.

It does look like those clouds are rolling in and taking over, like the space invaders you call them. Be careful, Petrea.

As long as the sun shines, it can get as cold as it wants (well, within limits).
We are having mid-50s F these days. Jerusalem is always colder than most of Israel, because of the altitude.
Snow is a rare treat.
Once in a great while the nights will go down to freezing point. Then we have to be careful to let water drip and keep the circulation going so the glass solar water heater panels on the roofs do not break.
When the villagers here forget, you see water streaming from the roofs the morning after a freeze.

Yalla, stay warm, Petrea. Think of Chicago.

I like your weather stories from different parts of the world. We've had some disconcerting weather here, too.

I do think of Chicago--I lived there for ten years. It gets extremely cold and windy there and I was a wimp about it. I acclimated to California quickly.

Rain, rain, and for a change of pace - more rain!!!!! Can't wait to watch the Rose Parade on cable here. Hope the weather holds up for you all. BTW, beautiful photo, Petrea.

It's currently 33 F here and partly sunny. It was foggy this morning (icy roads!). We've had a little snow, which has mostly melted off. This is typical winter weather here.

I keep hearing about the wind. I was outside till after dark and we weren't getting it. A breeze that kicked up the palms but not much after that.

It was windy out at Hahamongna yesterday, but mostly only up by the dam. Once we got down into the basin we were sheltered from it.

I hope the weather holds up for the Rose Parade! I once watched the parade on TV when it was pouring rain and cold. I felt so sorry for the baton twirlers in their little costumes, but they kept going.

At night in a cold snap, our temps might get close to 32 F on my side of town, but that's rare. And winter feels cold here because our architecture caters more for summer. I won't whine, though, as our daytime winter temps are often closer to 70, so not a hardship. I'm glad I'm only talking about these temps at the moment while enjoying a blue summer's day. Stay snug, Petrea!

Below freezing overnight in Altadena for the past week, and pretty chilly during the day. I left my heater set at 62 degrees while I was gone today, and it was on when I got home, which means the house got colder than that in just a few hours.

ok... i'm currently doing a 'google' translation since we work in celsius... hmmm

eek! 61 = 16 celsius! that's cold for me!

at the moment our temps have been ranging from 38 celsius (your 100.4 farenheit) to 42 celsius which is 107 farenheit! and dealing with humidity as well... phew ..

winter here (australian outback) gets down to 4 degrees (your 39.2 farenheit) in the mornings but usually warms up to 20 degrees during the day... so about 68 farenheit...

good thing I like the heat since we are mostly hot for the year except for a few winter months.

happy new year x

Shell, 32F is the freezing point, which is what Laura's talking about. Wow! Just a mile and a half up the hill and about 10 degrees difference. That's a lot.

Hi, dkshopgirl! It sounds like the Australian Outback is where I need to be. I love hot weather. Although you did mention humidity...hm.

Ah weather relativity. Berkeley gets down into the low 30s (though it rarely freezes) which after 15 years in the Bay Area seems really cold to me. When I lived in Minneapolis where I regularly experienced sub-zero winter temps (and yes snot really does freeze fast when it's 15 below) a 33-degree day felt balmy. Love the clouds in this photo!

I remember the snot thing from Chicago, so I can corroborate.
