Camelot Where You Are, #9

My theory is that Camelot is everywhere. Go ahead. Tell me I'm wrong.

Here's Jon's description of his find:

"This photograph is just outside the Settle Inn right outside Lincoln, Nebraska. It's a chain of hotels, but I believe they're mostly midwestern. I'm not certain if all their hotels go this all out, but they certainly seem to have here in Lincoln! A sentry tower sits just outside where weary travelers may enter and take a load off their weary feet (err, well, GPS-equipped, climate-controlled automobiles, that is). A knight in full medieval armor sits atop his steed, as if guarding the entrance.

"I've passed by this hotel countless times, but since hearing about your photo contest accompanying the exciting prospect of your novel being published, it gave me the opportunity I should have taken long ago to get up close and snap a photo of this unique, Nebraskan 'Camelot.'"

Thank you, Jon! I'm so glad you did.

Happy Monday! The winner of last week's Camelot Where You Are photo contest is Susan Z with entry #7, the Hotel Del Coronado! Susan wins a free copy of Camelot & Vine as soon as it's published. Thank you, Susan, and thank you all for your wonderful entries. I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying the contest and I hope you are, too.

I've figured out how to show you the results: screen shots! I think it's best, in the interest of full disclosure. So here are the shots:

Week 2

Week 1

I've received so many entries to the Camelot Where You Are photo contest that we're skipping Zen Monday this week. We'll do so next week as well. PDP gets the most traffic on weekdays and I want to make sure every entry gets the best possible audience.

Send in your pic now! It's easy to enter and anyone can do it.
Then be sure to vote over the coming weekend for your favorite of this week's entries. Each weekly winner receives a free copy of Camelot & Vine upon publication in October. Publication day, whatever day it turns out to be, will be the final day for entries.

There I was thinking the only town in Nebraska was Omaha and I only know that from the film Patton.

I love the stone tho, I know its probably not real... I've got some similar to that and was surprised to be told its only 1/4 of an inch thick..... :-(.... The downspout on that hotel needs a bit of trim don't u think? I still think its a neat example of Camelot.. BTW u r right, Camelot is everywhere!

There used to be the Gould Castle in the foothills above Crescenta Valley. There is still a Rock Castle Drive.

Good morning! I've updated the post with last week's winner, Susan Z with #7, Hotel Del Coronado! Congratulations to Susan and thank you to everyone who has entered so far. We have enough photos to keep going for a couple of weeks. I'm happy to continue as long as the photos come in. These are delightful.

JS, as you know, being from the Midwest, that's what they say about the west coast.

Dina, we need our fancies everywhere!

Paul, you can be excused because you would not be the first person to get your historical and geographical information from the movies.

KBF, they get A LOT of rain in the Midwest. Preparation is key.

Sid, now you've sent me googling.

Sid, I believe you've sent me hiking! Looks like it's still there:

This has got it all! Three cheers for Nebraska (and congrats to Susan and her Hotel Del Coronado too!).

Oh, that's a really good find in Lincoln, Nebraska, wherever that is. I think I sometimes fly over it. I'd like to live somewhere with more rain, but are there any hills or mountains?

Sid's onto something. There's also a castle flying the Scottish flag in La Canada, and a house with turrets in Flintridge that I saw through my binoculars as I was waiting for the Space Shuttle. I want to photograph them and enter under false names - it's frustrating that you only let us have one go each. I'm seeing Camelot EVERYWHERE!

Seeing the votes, I feel sorry for Macadamia Castle, which I thought very worthy of a win, especially as the photo was obtained under trying circumstances. I wanted to vote for them all, but I guess you can't give ALL your books away. :0) Susan, you're in for a treat when you read the book.

Nebraska is weirder that I ever imagined.

Fabulously weird.

Cool! I really like this mashup of architectural styles. Is this the new uniform for the Huskers?

I'm surprised you don't all know where Lincoln is. I may even have relatives there. Everybody should.

Laura M said...

I have relatives in Lincoln. Haven't visited since I was a kid, though.

The photo today is amazing. It's hard to get more "Camelot" than that.

I like the way you've shown the results from previous weeks. The pie charts make things so much more clear!

Petrea Burchard said...

Maybe we're related, Laura.

I wonder if you mock me, Mister Earl. I can take it.

Margaret said...

This is a great entry. I am so excited about these. I still have to do mine.

Susan Campisi said...

Kitsch Camelot! Is that insulting? I hope not.

Congrats to Susan Z on last week's win!

Mister Earl said...

Not mocking you, Petrea. But finding pie charts amusing.

Petrea Burchard said...

Please do, Margaret! I'm glad you're excited and I wantwantwant your entry.

I don't think it's insulting, Susan. So much of what we're going to find in this vein is going to be kitschy, you can't help it.

Everybody likes pie, Mister Earl. Doesn't everybody like pie?
