Storm Light

We had rain yesterday!

Rain!

The children ran out to play in it!

Boz got a raindrop on his head and refused to take one step further!

The storm poured down in rushes and lasted entire seconds!

And then...

And then...

Storm light.

What a special light, and a nice way to tie things together.

Darn it; John said precisely what I was going to say.

Yesterday we had gales and torrential rain all day but no storm light … but then this is England and it's pretty much like that all the time.

I hope Boz got over his raindrop shock.

Gorgeous, Petrea. We've gone a month without rain, yet it was our wettest winter in four years. So June and July were soggy but now everything's dried to a crisp. I look forward to feeling a drop of rain on my head. And it's spring here tomorrow, hooray!

I saw on the news your area had a bit of rain.. Good for you!.. We had a similar thing happen weeks ago! Ain't it great! the relief!

After a summer with virtually no rain, our state remains in drought. Tomorrow, rain is expected - 5 inches from the Hurricane Isaac storm system is projected. The city is preparing sandbags for low-lying areas of our city. I could use some. I need to make a swale of sorts outside my back door. Just in case. 'Cause you never know.

Thanks, J.

Isn't that great, Dina? I like what these folks did with their extra fronds. I'm going to steal it.

Dive, you and John are both such wits.

Yay for spring, Shell! Perhaps some spring rain?

KBF, you hit it on the nose. The relief! It built all day, or maybe all week, and boom! It had to happen.

I was so disappointed that the storm light was gone by the time I got to Sierra Madre last night. Tried some moon photos. Not so easy! Love your shot. You absolutely captured the feeling!

Speedway, I hope you get some of the overage. Not too much. But they say beggars can't be choosers, so pack up some sandbags just in case.

Thanks, Adele. It's a fleeting thing, isn't it? We even had little rainbows, but they were mere winks.

That's a well-gardened garden, I'm impressed that the owners care enough to tie the fronds up and put woodchip below. On the other hand, if it's their gardener that does this, I want his phone no.

Along the trail, once the sun reappeared, the sweet, aromatic scent of dried buckwheat hung heavy in the air. Wish we could capture fragrance as well as light in our photos. Boz would like that.

John says, "Nice". I say,'Damn that is one fine photo!" LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. Did you lie down in the wet grass to get it?

Bellis, wow, it would have been amazing to be up in the mountains hiking during those cloudbursts.

Virginia, this yard happens to be raised above the sidewalk just about camera height, so I did very few cameracrobatics. I'm glad you like the pic. It helps when the sun works in one's favor.

The light is GORGEOUS in this photo Petrea. I'm like Virginia, I love it!

Is that all you got? We had gutters rushing with water, a temporarily flooded street, and some power outages. It was so cool.

@Peterea: Kinda like that relief when the ob decides to break your water so u can push that baby out!. Believe me that WAS RELIEF! lol

Petrea Burchard said...

Merci, Eric! (Glad I remembered to post it.)

Hiker, that's all we got on my street. I think we might have gotten more last night, but it wasn't much. I'm glad you got a storm.

KBF, I wouldn't know, but OW!

Great colour..

I was happy to smell the rain for the first time in ages yesterday too, the lawn was in desperate need of it..

How is the situation about those falling branches? I have been concerned! Hope it feels a bit safer now for you all. Today's photo - lovely!

Petrea Burchard said...

I'm glad people like this one. Such a simple photo, and yes, it felt like relief and it smelled good, too.

LOL, I'll have an update for you tomorrow. You might be amazed.

Ok. I'll be back!

LOL, sorry, I won't be posting the photo I was thinking of. My neighbors' house is identifiable and I'm protective of my neighbors and my street. But here's the story:
Early this week, a branch fell in my neighbors' yard. This time it was not the size of my arm, as were the previous branches. It was the size of a mature tree, too big to get my arms around. Had anyone been standing where it landed, as my neighbor's children were doing mere seconds before it came down, they would have been killed.

Folks were pretty shook up.

The arborists who came (and they came quickly) said the tree is healthy. It may have been the heat. The tree may have been balancing itself, because city tree trimmers took off a heavy branch from the tree's other side last year. Nobody knows for sure.

I've never experienced this before, but the arborists tell us, "It happens. Branches fall."

Bellis said...

The heat really seems to weaken trees. One Memorial Day a few years ago, I was indoors because it was too hot outside. Suddenly, the view over the back garden turned green. It took me a while to realize that a huge tree filled the garden. My large, beloved Chinese elm had silently toppled over, carefully avoiding contact with the car and the house. So sad, so unexpected. It just fell over at the point where the trunk touched the ground.

Ms M said...

Yay for at least a little rain (we badly need some here)!
Such beautiful light -- nice photo!

Petrea Burchard said...

Bellis, we've had hotter summers here, don't you think? The arborists said this happens all the time, I just don't remember. I sure hope it doesn't happen to our Chinese Elm. I love that tree!

I hope you get some rain, Ms. M, you surely do need it as much as we do if not more.

Petrea! Thank you for keeping me up to speed and for taking the trouble to post a response here and on my blog. You are kind. I really am concerned. I am sure everywhere has a falling tree issue but not at this time of year, unless there is an obvious weather source. Your recent earthquakes got a mention on the news here and I am wondering if there is a connection. Reference your dropping your photographic evidence for today's entry - I completely understand. Identity has been an issue for me, a little. When I started doing this, I chose to use the 'name' people close to me call me and hide my identity. Well, FaceBook has changed that somewhat. I feel more confident now...so no worries. I will probably ask for an update from time to time on the falling branches. Take care, Lauren :)

Dina said...

So a tree can "balance itself"??
Wow, I never thought about such a thing.

Petrea Burchard said...

LOL, I didn't know we had earthquakes. Shows you I've gotten used to them. Either that or we didn't feel them in Pasadena.

I never thought about it either, Dina. Maybe he was making it up. But a friend told me her girlfriend said there are certain times of year she won't walk through Central Park in New York because branches are falling. So I guess it's not as unusual as I thought.

LOLfromPasa said...

Earthquake report for Pasadena: You had 11 (I can feel the earth move) moments in August...! I never felt them half the time when I lived there either. Thank goodness. Anyway, just be careful out there. No bumped heads, please.

Petrea Burchard said...

I did feel one a couple of weeks ago. My husband was in the next room and didn't notice it. We've been warned that "the big one" will be happening at any moment. We have our water tank and supplies, and our escape plan, just in case.

LOLfromPasa said...

I hope 'the big one' never happens. Good on you for being prepared...,!

Petrea Burchard said...

Thanks, LOL, I hope so, too.
