Comfort Zone

It's good to get out of the same old neighborhood, to test the waters, or the coffee, somewhere else.

So my friend and I visited Cafe de Leche in Highland Park, our sunny neighbor to the southwest. It's a good spot for a cup of coffee anytime but especially in the late afternoon, when the sun sets opposite this broad window.

I haven't spent much time in Highland Park but I like the feel of the neighborhood. It reminds me of my Chicago days. That's probably because I was hip and young when I lived in Chicago, and Highland Park has a hip, young vibe.

What a fun outing. I like to visit Young and Hipville now and again.

Such a small world. I know the owners of this place. I'll send them a link to the blog. They have a luncheonette across the street from Cafe de Leche that I could only wish was closer to Pasadena.

Adele, I think I stood out like a sore thumb. But one has to just get over that and decide that old is hip.

Hi Lisa C, that's so cool! I must have walked right past the luncheonette. If it's as comfy as Cafe de Leche I have to try it.

I like this sort of photograph a lot. There is plenty to look at through those really clean windows.

I've never walked along York Boulevard, just driven through what looks like a rather exotic Central American community. And I thought this stretch of it was in Eagle Rock. I really don't know quite where Highland Park begins and ends - does it include Garvanza? Time to explore on foot, and end with a coffee and pastry at the Cafe.

I wonder, LOL, what poor soul has the job of cleaning them?

Bellis, I looked it up and some foodie sites say Eagle Rock, some say Highland park. The Cafe's contact info page is down, so I went with Yelp.

The cafe looks very inviting. Reminds me of my young, hip days in Seattle where I spent many hours sitting in cafes.

I doubt very much you stuck out like a sore thumb! I recently hung out with a writer buddy at Johnny's, just down the block. Bellis: park and try the food at the York, it's fabulous!

Susan, I didn't begin to hang out in cafes until I got older! Took me a while to catch on.

Desiree, thanks for the suggestions. (We will assume Johnny's is good too, because you went there.) For those of you who haven't checked out Desiree's blog, do so if you like delicious food with a touch of ease and wisdom.

Love the combo of the beautiful upper window and the amazingly huge lower one with the peek-a-boo view of the hills. Always fun to venture out to new neighborhoods and try out new coffee shops. But of course I have to ask, how were the pastries?

We had some delectable cookies. Katie, if I'd been thinking more clearly I'd have sampled more things for you.

Looks like a nice place. You'll have to let us know how their cafe is.

The horchata con espresso at Cafe de Leche is to die for. Seriously. You've never tasted horchata so creamy. It is delicious both hot and cold. Yum.

Ms. M, my neighbors have been talking about the cafe today. "They have the best salads!" "They have the best sandwiches!" Apparently it's across the street. I'll have to try it.

Christina, you sold me.

So your all hanging out in my hood and no one bothers to invite me? The nerve

I am a bad person. I met with a mutual friend of ours to pick her brain about book publishing. We had some very nice cookies.
