Commute, 11

You can't take the freeway all the way from Pasadena to Hollywood. You've got to take surface streets a good part of the time.

Sometimes I take Santa Monica Blvd. instead of Beverly Blvd. Santa Monica is not all like this. It has interesting stretches, though Beverly is more lively more of the time.

I'm told Santa Monica is faster than Beverly, but I prefer Beverly. Go figure.

Never tried S.M., actually, I like Melrose, more eateries to pass by, also the crazy drivers who turn left on a do not turn left sign that has specific hours saying when they can.. naturally they turn when they aren't suppose to!. More action on Melrose and it flows faster than Beverly.. At one time, the street construction on Beverly drove me crazy!...lol

All good points, KBF! Melrose is lively but too busy and too skinny too much of the time, at least for my hurry!

Well, I guess that store prefers Santa Monica Blvd. Are you referring to the sections of these roads before the Hollywood Freeway? I'm only really familiar with the roads between the freeway and the trendy part of Melrose. My kids always want to shop there when they visit. (I find it so ugly compared to Old Pasadena).

Lots of ethnic areas along these roads - Little Armenia, Koreatown, Thai Town. Which "town" is this photo in?

Beverly Blvd changed my life as that's the street Tommy was trotting down when I first saw him. I picked him up on the corner of Beverly and Rampart. I prefer Beverly to Santa Monica as well.

Beautiful shot, Petrea. Only in America do you get streetscapes like that: the ground floor bleak and the top floor overexcited. As a European, that kind of view draws me more than any amount of Grand Canyons … God only knows why.

Bellis, I take the 2 freeway to where it meets the 5 near Silverlake. From there I can choose several different routes. This photo is in Hollywood, near the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (which makes a nicer picture but traffic never slows down there).

I see why you have that preference, Susan!

I guess you like the blue sky, Dive. I don't blame you. What I like in your pictures is the green terrain, when you show it. And the old, old buildings.

Funny, I would think most people would consider Beverly faster and less congested than either S.M. Blvd or Melrose.

Although the Beverly-Virgil-Temple interesection is one of my least favorite spots on earth.

I can take the freeway from Pasadena to Hollywood: Pasadena FW to the Hollywood FW. Then I usually exit at Sunset or Hollywood Blvds.

Someone mentioned the 4Ever Cemetery (on StMo Blvd)? I visited it last year with a handful of friends who are very interested in the Hollywood style of LA history. One day I'll post those pics, but they came out kinda lifeless.

Ha!

I guess where I'm going is kind of the "south side," Cafe.

Now this is an authentic LA conversation.

Interesting shot -- from a past era, it seems.

Let's hope it's in the past, Ms. M. I'd like to leave the recession behind us.

in Los Angeles, any conversation can include a few words about the commute.

I see too many brothers, sisters, and cousins to this street. And Sears isn't long for this world, is it? And then where will I get my Kenmore appliances? (They last forever.)

How did Boz take the fireworks? I emailed or posted or blah-blahed someone how Phoebe taught Albert not to be afraid of fireworks, so he snoozed. We were on Calavaras about an hour ago and there was a big CRACK! BOOM! and I jumped, but he didn't.

Made me think about writing something -- how Phoebe feared nothing, until she was dying. But then I thought, I don't feel like bleeding that right now.

No kidding, Alex.

I don't know, Karin, the Pasadena Sears is doing okay as far as I can tell.
I don't blame you for not wanting to write about Phoebe right now. I've sometimes wondered how or if I'll ever write about Boz once he's gone. And he doesn't mind fireworks at all. I don't suppose that's any surprise. He's not what you'd call skittish.

Good for Phoebe, fearing nothing and teaching Albert too. The fact that you miss her every day shows how special she was.
Abby's not bothered by them, thank goodness, because I think she's going a bit deaf. I have just heard on the news that the shelters are full of dogs that ran away from the noise. I do hope their owners come for them. Be nice if the fines were waived.

It sounded like a war zone around here last night, didn't it, Bellis? No wonder the dogs were scared.
