Deja Brew

Here's a fine kettle of caffeine (and more awnings for Susan):

I'm such a pro that although I've been blogging daily since 1/1/08 I didn't know until yesterday that Blogger saves my photos to Picasa. Sometimes it saves four or five copies, and now my Picasa album is so full I can't upload new photos to it. (I deleted about 40 photos, but that didn't help.)

Until I figure it out (or make the long-threatened move to Wordpress), here's a photo I posted January 15th, 2008 (my fifteenth day of blogging). I took the shot at Il Capo Restaurant on Green Street. Malbec Argentine restaurant occupies the location now.

Have you experienced this Picasa problem? Did you buy more space? Move to Wordpress? Delete old photos? I'd be grateful to hear your suggestions.

Uhhmmm, maybe you should get a new google id and then add it as admin to your blog that way you'll get a brand new picasa web album space when you use your new user. just saying, that's what I do. :D

the only downside with this is you have to re-follow blogs that you like.

I have never heard about that problem before. Did you try the help forum? I rarely upload via blogger or picasa, so I can't help you here I'm afraid.

Man, I didn't even know that about Blogger and Picasa. You have a jillion more blog photos than I, so it hasn't been a problem for me...yet.

Maybe you could move the earliest years to a new blog, and then free up space in this blog's picasa album.

I don't allow Picasa to store my photos...

The photos people store on places such as Photobucket and Flickr are only costing them money unless they can sell your photos and earn some money. You have to be very careful how you set them up so they are not allowed to use or sell your photos.

I moved to Wordpress some months ago because of Blogger problems. Wordpress takes some getting used to or it did for me. I am 78 so age might make a difference. I still have Bogger or blogs on blogger but am in the process of using the blogs there to link to my Wordpress blogs. All are under construction.

I use Blogspot but was not aware the photos are save at Picase, so I will have to investigate.

Lovely photo and title for your post by the way.

Thanks, everyone.

Prem, that sounds like a decent solution. I'll put it on my list of possibilities.

Steffe, I tried the help forum but have received no answers. I do not upload via Picasa (I never knew about it 'til yesterday). I upload directly from my photo software. But Blogger saves a copy to my Picasa album.

If you're on Blogger, Blogger saves a copy (in my case, sometimes several) to your Picasa album. Even if you don't think you have one, you do. Go to your Google page, click on Picasa and sign in with your Google ID.

Apparently it takes a while, Ann!

Jean, another possible solution for my list.

KBF, how do you do that? I wasn't aware I was doing it at all. Are you on Blogger?

Abe, I don't remember setting this up at all. I think it's automatic. It must be part of the 900 page user agreement everyone clicks on but nobody reads.

I know all my photos are on Picassa, but that's the editing software I use (or at least, I get to the software from there). So once you figure it out, you can tell me all about it.

Hmmm...I couldn't find Picasa from my Google page, and when I went directly to Picasa, there wasn't a place to sign in.. I'm familiar with it, but have never used it for my photos.

Picasa stopped uploading my photos a long time ago, Petrea. It doesn't bother me as I never use it and my photos still upload to my blog with no problem. All my old Picasa albums are still there and locked so nobody can access them so I'm happy to just leave them there.

Petrea Burchard said...

I must have signed up for it without knowing--or, more likely, didn't opt out of it because I didn't know what it was. Dive, do you know why Picasa stopped uploading your photos? Blogger tells me it will not upload photos at all because Picasa is full, even though as far as I knew until yesterday I wasn't even using Picasa.

Let me offer this: I did know that our Blogger photos are saved in Picasa. I am delighted because I already use Picasa to store a multitude of other photos which I share with the family. I signed up for Picasa Web Album and purchased extra space for pence. Re Wordpress - I hear there are problems and friends have moved. I really like Blogger (Blogspot) and like the idea of a copy of photos being save in 'the cloud'. You know the rule - save your pics in 3 places (one at home, one on a hard drive kept away from home in case of fire and one in cyberspace.) Got to go....dinner is seriously burning :).

PS Lovely photograph. Think I'll have a coffee after dinner!!! Decaf, of course.

Petrea I had exactly the same problem recently, and this is what I eventually discovered. Blogger automatically uploads your pics into a Picasa Web Album. Picassa offers 1 GB of free storage for photos and videos then tells you it is full and you must buy more storage. However the good news is, files under certain size limits (800 x 800 pixels)don't count towards this free storage limit.
So, resize your pics before posting to no more than 800 x 800 pixels and you can post as many as you like.
The bad news is that you will need to clear out some old pics to create some space to work with.
Hope this helps. Maybe you should sit down and drink that lovely looking cup of coffee before starting work!

Deb said...

Should add that you need to clear the pics from your Picasa album to make some space, not your blog. (Removing them from Picasa will also remove them from your blog but you can always repost 'em resized if you wish to keep a post intact).

Your photo reminds me of my favorite painting at the Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge, "White saucer and cup" by Henri Fantin-Latour.

It looks like I really have my work cut out for me! Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. (I may do greatest hits for a couple of days until I have time to delete and re-load a few shots.)

Bellis, I will take that as a compliment. Thank you.

Petrea Burchard said...

This has been very interesting. I've deleted about 100 photos from Picasa (almost lost this one). At 70, Blogger still wouldn't let me upload. But I think I'll have a new one tomorrow. Yikes.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions today! They're working. I found out that you can tell which of your duplicate photos is the one you uploaded because at the lower left (in Picasa) it shows you how many views it's had. If the photo has had 0 views, it's likely not the one you posted.

LONDONLULU said...

I needed that caffeine shot today, thanks! I actually use Picasa to save other photos -- probably mentioned by others, but deleting duplicates helps (if you accidentally delete the one used for a post, you can repost, and the viewcount is def. a tip off). Also, I've been trying to upload the lowest pixel version of a photo I have (I'll even resize on my computer -- or you can upload direct from the Picasa pgm on your computer & choose the low 800x800 size). Once you've got that lower megapixel version on your computer or Picasa cloud, you can use that one for the blog. I think other venues like Wordpress have space limits as well, sigh.

I had no idea. Hmm.

Ms M said...

Hmmm, I didn't know they had limits. I will have to check this out. I've been blogging since 2006 on Blogger. I do "downsize" my photos using Photoshop.
It's like Rosanne Rosannadanna says: "It's always something."

Susan Campisi said...

So true, Ms M. I can hear her saying it, too.

P, I don't know anything about Picasa but you are certainly in good hands with this group. I like the Deja Brew photo and the original, definitely a slice of Paris. And I love the green awnings!

Petrea Burchard said...

I finally got an answer from Blogger! Yay!

The answer was, "Look at the bottom of the Picasa page and it tells you how much space you have left."

My question was, "Do I have to use Picasa to use Blogger?"

...?

Probably not a problem for most people, just for daily bloggers. I have to face it, I've been up loading at least one large file every day for nearly five years. I just didn't know I was doing it. If I find any workarounds, I'll let you know.

Susan, those awnings are for you.

Ms M said...

Petrea, When I was looking around last night for info about Picasa I came across a Help board where someone asked the same question. The answer unfortunately is yes; we end up using Picasa by default when we use Blogger because they have integrated the programming of the 2. It seems that currently, there is no way to upload photos to Blogger w/o them going to Picasa.

TheChieftess said...

Well darn!!! Again...who knew!!! I hate that my photos are out there in internet ethers out of my control!!!

Petrea Burchard said...

I hate it, too, Chieftess. I don't want Google's grubby hands on my photos.

Keep in mind, you own the copyright no matter what. Your photos are accessible on Picasa with your google account information. If you don't choose to share them, they can't be shared. So go to Picasa and select the settings you want.

I must have missed the notification when I set up my blog. If there was a notification. From the reactions I'm getting, I'm not the only one who missed it.

I am glad you have got all the right answers already. Looks like only resizing can help.
