Titania's Bench

William Shakespeare's presumed 448th birthday (and the 396th anniversary of his death) landed on Zen Monday, so I saved this picture for today.

On a stroll through South Pasadena I saw this bench, a perfect spot for faeries. I don't recommend it as a chair for bards, though, unless they wear rubber pantaloons, because that bright green seat color is moss. But it's fine for faeries and other woodland creatures. It might even be a nice place for Bottom to rest his a**.

Bottom could relax at a snail's pace.

GORGEOUS bench!... That moss is a definite focal point as well as being a conversation piece.

Nautilus is one of my favorite shells and I love this bench. In Renaissance gardens they would plant benches with herbs so that when one sat, the fragrance of the herb would surround you.

Ah! The "ancient" English history you mentioned. Beautiful bench, and post. Happy Birthday, Mr. Shakespeare!

What an imaginative and beautiful bench.. Is it in a park on on private land? Where can I get one?

Herb seats and chamomile lawns were very fashionable in England in the 90s, but were hard to keep alive if you wanted to sit on them too often.

JB, you made me go and look it up.

Ann: hahaha!

Kalei, the green was so bright it attracted my eye as much as the shape of the bench did.

Bayside, you're giving me ideas for my (ahem) yard.

Adele, it was an Italian named Franco Zefirelli who hooked me.

I saw his Romeo and Juliet when I was Juliet's age, and I was hooked on Shakespeare. Then Shakespeare hooked me on England.

Bellis, if I have my memory on straight it's in a private yard on Hope St. at the corner of Meridian. Might be Fairview, though.

What's an a**? I did mean to do something for Will's birthday, maybe finally finish Measure for Measure. But things came up so that will have to wait for another year.

I thought of you when I wrote this, Karin. I thought, "Karin would go ahead and say 'ass.' She wouldn't chicken out." Then I thought, "What about the little children who read my blog? Would they be disappointed in me? Would their parents send me hate mail?"

I'm thinking of changing it from a** to ass. Just trying to get up the nerve.

Bellis said...

Hey, an ass is an animal, rather a nice one, mentioned in the Bible. And Bottom was an ass so it's appropriate - and I guess that's why Shakespeare chose him.

Well, we don't want the children of Pasadena openly weeping in the streets.

You could use arse, though unless you're British or Irish that would be pretentious.

Petrea Burchard said...

Bellis, you're right. I could use it. But now it's too late, I suppose, because I'd undermine Karin's first comment.

And I can't use arse, of course, because je ne suis pas pretentious.

I must admit I've sat on a few benches that left my a** a bit green...but I think I'd refrain from sitting on this one!!!

Petrea Burchard said...

Chieftess, surely not. I have never seen you with a green patoot.

Well done for pointing out anniversary of Shakespeare's birth and death. It was also St George's Day in England. Lovely photograph. Cheers!

LOLfromPasa and Ace, thanks for your visit! I never think to look up St. George's Day because we don't celebrate it here. Nice that they landed on the same day.
