Bike Bike Bike Bike

When John and I pulled up behind these wheels we were thankful for the red light. We needed time for the camera scramble, plus we wanted to figure out how many bikes were attached to this car.

But I can beat this. Take a look: it was a Zen Monday in 2010. Not quite in focus, but enough to see the difference between sane, happy family off to ride bikes on the mountain trails and insane someone who MUST HAVE BIKE BIKE BIKE BIKE BIKE.

I have a jar where I throw change. Do you collect?

A scrap dealer with a powerful electromagnet attached to the boot er - truck? I think I detect the remains of a small child pinned between the prey...

I count 4 bikes and yes, I do collect... I still have the pure silver dollars my Dad would collect as well as Kennedy 1/2 dollars... remember those? Also foreign change from trip to Europe...

I sling anything smaller that €1 (which - along with €2 - is a coin) into a lidded ceramic jar by Ruth King. Take it to the coin-counter at the bank every 6 months or so and mostly get around €70)
Plus ziplock bags with notes, coins, public transport cards and (where applicable) credit cards for Thai baht, NZ $, US $ and GB £. Used to be horrendous before the € if you traveled a lot on business- toss up between buying some duty-free you didn't need or storing the remnants close to 20 currencies

Fun photo! I like the bike with the basket. Maybe that's where the picnic lunch goes. I collect quarters for laundry, regular pennies (that I put into rolls once I get 50 and eventually return to the bank for real money), and wheatie pennies that I actually keep.

Everyone here so far collects money. So practical. No bikes? No antique automobiles? No grandma's dishes?

JB, maybe you should have kept some of those European currencies no longer in circulation. Surely they'll be more valuable as they become more rare. Kalei's silver dollars and Kennedy half dollars are gaining value, albeit slowly. Can't say the same for Katie's (and my) wheatie pennies. But stick around a hundred years, it'll happen.

Willie collects boats. Only puts them behind the car one at a time, though.

Remember the I Love Lucy dishes that were on the show? The ivy patterned ones? My mom has the whole set... I wanted them for years and now told her I don't have room, nor would I make use...I do have my grandma's green bud vase that I've always liked when I was little.. My Grandpa's gold watch, Notre Dame pin, which I did not know existed.

I collect Santas...although I'm finally at the point of weeding out my Christmas decorations...when we moved I downsized considerably!!!

I also like and use vintage glass ware...wine glasses, dishes, etc...I used to frequent antique stores a lot and would pick up a piece here and there...I use them all the time!!!

I see only three and a half bikes. The wheel on the right, under the basket, appears to be a stray.

Collect? Surely you jest. We are archivists - his, hers, his parents and grandparents (deceased), her parents and grandparents (deceased), plus assorted children (grown). The byproduct of nostalgia, and fascination with roots and things beautiful (and maybe not so) from earlier times. We just can't say goodbye.

Spare change? Of course.

That picture is totally adorable. I used to be like that with the bike rack - a couple years ago, I got a folding bike, and now everything fits in the car. Not as good a picture, but I'll take it.

I collect dust. And cobwebs. I think there are more spiders per square inch in Altadena than anywhere else in California.

That second photo takes hoarding onto an entirely new level

Fun photo! I hope they enjoyed their ride.
I have somehow ended up collecting kalimbas (thumb pianos). They make bell-like tones when played and are wonderful for soothing a work-worn day.

Denise, you crack me up. I hope to see Willie's boat collection one day.

Kalei, you remind me of my mother's dishes, which I've used once. But there's a story about her and my father's mother on the dock in Oakland at the end of WWII which makes it impossible for me to part with them.

Chieftess, you remind me of the antique green glass set, the ones I actually use. I have no idea what got me started collecting them but I finally had to stop.

Anonymous, that's well said. All of it. And I see what you mean about the extra wheel.

Chris I've seen those folding bikes. Most convenient. You can practically fit it in your purse.

Laura, I lived in Altadena for two years and I know you're right.

Alex, come back Monday. I got a Zen Monday shot just for you.

Des, is that crazy? I've never forgotten it.

Ms. M, you've just told me more about Mr. M's kind tolerance than a direct description ever could.
