Today when I think of electricity I think of what it would be like not to have it. The Dark Ages, for example, were really, really dark. Imagine having to ride from, say, Oxford to London (Londinium) in 500 A.D. At night. I mean, no street lights. Not one!
(I don't think the Dark Ages were called the Dark Ages in Pasadena, but it was just as dark here.)

I'm even spooked when a stretch of freeway lights has gone out. I'd have found life very difficult back then. I'm spoiled, what can I say.
When the lights go out for a few days after a hurricane, we get a bit of the dark and the quiet... not bad for a few moments, but definitely makes you think.
Lovely scene you have presented...

What a mood you created!! I really like it.
Just imagine how brilliant the stars were back in the Dark Ages!
The moon definitely made a big difference in the Dark Ages, it's a pity that we've lost touch with the phases of this useful lantern in the sky. I wish I could go back to a time before electricity (just for a few days) to see how bright the moon and stars must have been, don't you?
I think I would have liked it. It's hard to say, not knowing. Had we lived then, we wouldn't have today's electricity to compare it to. Would I be the one to go out riding at night, or would I be the one to stay by the fire? I do like heat. But I like stars, too. Imagine the Milky Way lighting your travels!
I'll never understand how it works, tho
Me either. I hope I never have to.
I guess it's still the dark ages in Mammoth! At least as far as street lights go! That and when a power pole goes down!
Fancy conjuring up the dark ages for us, Petrea. I would not even consider riding from Oxford to London (by any other name) at night, with or without street lights!
I like the photo, and the flattery on the comments field!
I know we need them but sometimes it is good to get away from light polluted skys and really see the stars.
Nice image you captured here, not easy to do. We had the new moon, Jupiter and Venus all in a line here a few nights back, looked spectacular but could I get a decent picture.........
I'd like Mammoth, Chieftess.
I think I'd like it, Paul. The ride, I mean. It's only a fantasy, though. I imagine there were a lot of blackguards along that road in those days.
Thanks, Deb. Yes, we saw it here, too. It was so bright it looked spectacular even from a parking lot in Hollywood.
When we lived in Phoenix, I drove down to Guaymas, Mexico in the middle of the night. There were absolutely no lights for miles and miles and miles. It was so dark and so scary! That was in 1961, I think.
Beautiful photo.
I was thinking about everything we could not do/make/create/be without electricity on my way to work this morning.
I love this beautiful shot P. Sometimes it's nice to be in the dark and quiet. Now when it comes when I want to read or be on the computer.....Katy bar the door~

I love photos of the moon, and this one is so atmospheric!
I grew up on a farm, away from city lights, and it was amazing how many stars we could see on a clear night.
Hi Lowell--that would've scared me too!
Tash, I'd like to hear your list.
V, I know what you mean. I'm happy to be in the dark in my own back yard...
Ms. M, I grew up on the edge of town, surrounded by farms. You remind me we sat on the roof and watching the Milky Way on summer nights.
I feel like we need to hear some wolves now.
The moon seen through drifting clouds - always sends a shiver! Even growing up in Long Beach, I remember a lot more stars than I can see now in Arcadia. And when we used to travel and be out in the wilds somewhere, the stars were spectacular. If it's dark enough, even starlight is noticeable light, I think. But now starlight is just a fanciful notion. We don't really know what it is.
I heard wolves.
Hi Carol, you can still find starlight but you have to get awfully far from Los Angeles!
That's exactly what I think from time to time!
If electricity goes out, what happen to us, 100% depending city people??
Now THAT's a way to tell a story with a photograph!
Thank you so much, Buck!
