Real Irish

apple blossom on the tree in my back yard

Next Friday, for the first time in quite a while, I'll be performing live!

It's not like a Madonna concert exactly. (Actually I don't know that. I've never been to a Madonna concert.) Friday, March 9th, I'll be joining Anne Louise Bannon at Webster's Fine Stationers for "Real Irish," an early lead-in to St. Patrick's Day. (I wanted to call it "Lorica and Scot go to Ireland," but I was outvoted.)

Anne is a renaissance woman, a freelance writer and a wine afficionado. I even buy my handmade soap from her. Plus it turns out she holds a Master's degree in oral interpretation (even more obscure than my Bachelor's in Rhetoric). My qualifications are almost as good: I like to drink wine and I like to talk (okay, I've also had a 30-year acting career and I'm actually paid to talk), so we make a good pair. Anne is even of Irish descent, which makes her green-wearin' legit. (She's Real Irish.)

I'll just admit it right now: I'm a Scot. The family claims Welsh descent as well. None of this qualifies as Irish. (I am Not Real Irish.)

Anne and I figured a wine tasting and some Celtic and Irish literature would make a fun late afternoon/early evening. Starting at 4:30, come to Webster's and have some wine. At 5:30, once your edges are soft, Anne and I will read to you for a little while. In fact, in fewer than 30 minutes, we will run you through a simplified gamut of the entire history of Irish literature. As if that were possible.

Come on by. We'll get you all Irished before you head down the hill for Art Night Pasadena.

I love the little bloom.

And wish very much I could hear you and Anne speak.

This looks/sounds wonderful! I'm forwarding it to my friend Aisling in Dublin (Ireland, not Ohio) immediately. She'll love it, too.

Éirinn go brách!

You, my friends who live far away, are kind. My local friends know me too well! It'll be a fun evening and I believe I'll have at least one glass of that Irish wine before we start.

I almost scheduled a trip to be in town this week to meet my new great nephew---something else came up that has kept me home, otherwise I'd be SO there.

Despite my family name, I'm finding with my search into history, there aren't a lot of the Irish in my ancestry. Doesn't stop me from enjoying a glass of Jameson now and again, though the Scot rings true with some of the Glenlivet more often.

Enjoy and I'd bet a You Tube upload might be popular.

Very timely, as I'm off to Ireland in May and know zilch about its history!

Shanna of "View" fame might help out with the Irish drums. She's a super Ire-phile

Trish, I'm sure the Irish don't mind if we non-Irish enjoy their products...

Diana, I know less of Ireland's history than I do of its literature, and that's saying something.

I didn't know that, PA. I'll check with my cohorts and see how they feel about drums. I like the idea.

May be at a meeting, but if not, I hope to be there.

Darn that slow-to-be-built fast train from SF to LA -- I would so like to zip down there to attend this event! Wine tasting and Irish literature sounds like a fabulous combination, and I'm sure you and Anne will knock everyone's socks off with your reading. I don't suppose there's any way that someone might film this is there?

Oh Hiker, now you've just raised the bar.

You too, Roberta.

I don't know about filming, Katie. I still haven't decided what to wear.

I don't know about filming, either, Petrea, but I'll definitely have my camera ready!

We're looking forward to this with great anticipation, as the combination of wine, Irish literature read by two of my favorite ladies, good food and even an art exhibit is just too exciting!

The photo is lovely, as always....

Sounds like such a fun event! Wish I could come see you.
Lovely photos of the beautiful little bloom.

That's a beautiful photo - I like the way the blossom is in focus. I also like the thought of having my edges softened while enjoying some craic. It'd be nice to have Celtic wine, but I don't think grapes grow there.

After your ceilidh I'll be off to see what New Town is doing at the corner of Fair Oaks and Orange Grove.

Lori, "great anticipation" is a lot of pressure. Let's look forward to it with mild trepidation, shall we?

It would be so nice to see you, Ms. M!

Bellis, the Romans and maybe those before them imported wine to the British Isles, so the Irish Celts would likely have known what good wine tasted like. You probably know more about this than I do.

By the way, I have it on good authority that the wine at the Real Irish event will be green.

I'm sure you have a fine brogue when you choose to whip it out, Petrea. Having some Scots ancestry myself, I'm even more firmly convinced we're related. Perhaps Boz will turn out to be my second cousin five times removed. Have fun! {The Irish-Dutch courage sounds like a good idea. I hear it loosens the tongue muscles.}

Green wine???

Petrea Burchard said...

Shell, John keeps reminding me that Boz is not our offspring and I know it (I was there), but he does feel like kin, and not removed at all. So I believe your theory is plausible.
As for a brogue, I can do one, but probably won't do much.

Green, Bellis. I forgot what Anne said it was called, but it's not dyed. Not Irish either, because as you pointed out, grapes don't grow there. But green.

Trish said...

I've been accused of being Irish for so long, I no longer deny the heritage---no one believes me when I try. Red hair doesn't help my case.

I'm with Katie on the train thing, I'd SO be there!

If they can create green beer, they can create green wine. Doesn't mean it tastes better tho!

And what do you mean Boz isn't your offspring?!?!?! Who feeds him, walks him, comforts him, gives him lots of love? Sheesh!

Petrea Burchard said...

Trish, all I'm saying is I don't recall the pregnancy.

Petrea---probably from drinking all that green wine! ;-O
