Oxymora

The last bit of sunlight bleeds off the treetops even as the moon rises. Opposites uniting in the natural world to make a thing of beauty.

You can find online lists of oxymora (nice word, that). "Military intelligence" is a popular one but it's sarcastic, which means it's only an oxymoron if you believe the military is not intelligent. A better example is the ever popular "jumbo shrimp," or my new favorite, "butt head." These are oxymora in fact, not opinion. (I also like "Congressional action," but there we go again with the sarcasm.)

Let's hear yours today, sarcastic or not. Oxymorons unite!

I used to say the EPA's Superfund: it's neither super nor a fund. (well, I tried). Like the light in this photo.

Love that photo!.. I never knew there was a word for what you captured there!. How about 'inside out'?

Wow! Beaufiful photo!

Oxymoron, "paradoxo" in Portuguese is just amazing. I like this:
"silence noisy", in Portuguese,
"silĂȘncio barulhento".

Have a nice week ahead.

Thanks Steve. Good one.

Thank you, Kalei. Excellent oxymoron choice.

Perfect, Sonia. I think our similar phrase would be "deafening silence."

My favorite is "death benefit." Nice photo. I like it.

Senate Intelligence Committee. (seriously?)

Religious Right. (frequently neither)

Paperless office. (I had a job 18 years ago that insisted we would be paperless...last I heard, they are still required to have paper to file T&E reports).

Super Committee. (really? nothing super about it).

Simple Majority. (nothing simple about it)

No child left behind. (should be "Most children left behind")

I could go on but will save a few for others.

Good good good. I love these.

Lovely peaceful looking photo.

How about:
unbiased opinions
anarchy rules
airline food

The most frequent oxymoron in my life is "Here, Boz."

I can beat that. "Heel, Albert."

heeeeeeeeee!

After much walking today, my new one is "happy feet."

Love your photo! Just beautiful! I cannot think of any oxymora right now. Some will probably burst into my head later, after I've gone to bed, like at 3 am. But it looks like others have provided plenty. :-)

Imagine a hot dog for this one: "Leave it, Tommy."

Love the photo, too. Beautiful.

Great photo, especially that little bit of light on the trees. My oxymoronic submission is workout clothing. Often there's very little of either!

It took me a minute to figure out this person was talking about humility but I heard someone say once that "a spiritual giant" is oxymoronic.

No sarcasm from me, and no oxymorons either. Too much work. Very nice photo.

I often spot oxymora, but my mind went blank today until I located that list you referred to. It's fun to read and, of course, the best oxymora are sarcastic, aren't they? Top of my list is "Friendly fire." Nothing friendly about that, ever.

Susan Campisi said...

That's a great example, Bellis.

I shouldn't admit this, but I once said, "I'm looking forward to living in the moment."

Petrea Burchard said...

I wouldn't mind sitting in front of a friendly fire with a nice book and a cup of tea. But I think that's not what you mean, Bellis.

Yeah, we all know these but of course when you're trying to think of them they don't come to the brain. "Jumbo shrimp," that was so lame. But Deb, I like yours--"airline food," and of course all the dog ones.

Glad you guys like the photo. I came across it in my files. Sometimes I don't know what I've got in this computer. A lot of pictures of who knows what.

Susan, that's brilliant.

Guess I better go get that tea!!!
