John and I like to take road trips together. We like discoveries, seeing things we haven't seen before, getting onto the backroads. There's something about the road itself--movement, quiet, scenery (beautiful or boring)--that cocoons us in the car, encourages conversation and takes us out of our everyday. The road, for us, is togetherness.
We've taken trips that last several weeks or a single day. Some of them blend together in memory. That's because they've all been so good.
There's a reason the word "milestone" is used to mark an important moment in time. A ten year anniversary is far, yet not such a long way yet. It's all been so good.

Ashland, Oregon would be a good destination for one of your road trips, if you haven't been there yet. Check out my "Life in Ashland" to get a flavor of the place.
I used to live in Pasadena a long, long time ago. Love your images.
Happy Anniversary, Petrea and John.
That's a gorgeous photo. It makes me yearn to get out there and drive that road. Unfortunately I'm about to drive into the city to go to work and that's not quite the same kind of trip.
Here's to your next ten years.
How incredibly sweet! Bless you.
Where was this taken?
Oh congrats you two. And many many more years to come, I'm sure!
Thanks, George. Actually, one of our trips was to Ashland.
Thank you, Dive. No train to London? You can get a lot of reading done.
Merci beaucoup, Patrizzi and Anonymous.
This was taken in the hills above Santa Paula, Vanda. I don't remember exactly which road, unfortunately. Those details do tend to run together.
Hi Ben! Thank you. Nice to see you!
Happy Anniversary!
Perhaps it is road trips that keep a marriage going---we do the same thing (we just counted 20). We take back roads, find little farms, small markets, backroad merchants and out of the way winery...and love it.
I think I recall taking that road in SP, but before it was so pretty and paved a few years ago (cough), or maybe it was another backroad nearby.
Keep taking pics, keep taking trips. Keep celebrating love!
Congratulations!!!! How lucky that you found one another. The traditional gift is, apparently tin (in the UK) and diamond (in the US). I'd stick to tin if I were you - far more useful. Hope you have a long, winding, companionable road trip today. The weather's at its best.
Gorgeous!
It's a beautiful picture, Petrea. Many good wishes for a lot more happy years and the wonderful road trips. They are the best part of a relationship, I think, because I always recall our trips as the best times Carl and I had together. Who better to explore backroads with than the "dear companions" of our lives?
Today is my parents' anniversary, too! 53 years, I think? Congrats to you and John. Hope you enjoy many more healthy, happy years together.
Love the photo. Makes me yearn for a road trip too.
Congrats and may you two enjoy many, many more.
Happy Anniversary!! I too adore road trips. When we lived down your way, a favorite trip was Santa Barbara. It's so pretty there, and the food is fabulous.
Where are you going? I don't mean this metaphorically.
Thanks for your good wishes, everyone. We took a day trip into the mountains and hiked a trail on Mount Hillyer, thanks to a recommendation from Bellis. It was cool and windy and beautiful. "A tonic," John said. I loved the pine meadows and rock formations. We made just enough noise to warn the bears we were coming, but honestly I think we were the only ones there.
How wonderful that you and John share a love of road trips. I'm sure you have many happy miles ahead. Congrats on 10 years together!
Happy, happy anniversary! And here's to many more!
And to more great photos!
Thanks. We both took pictures on the mountain, of course.
How lovely! Happy Anniversary to you and John! Wishing you many more milestones worth of road trips ahead.
Happy Anniversary!
I love day trips! We can see the ocean, mountains, and desert all in one day if we want to...and I have.
Thank you, Shell!
J.J., we're fortunate, aren't we? Within less than an hour we were completely away from civilization, high in the mountains, with no one to share the path but bears.
What an awesome photo - you've captured the elusive beauty of roads taken. Super cool and a very happy anniversary to you both.
Thank you, Tash.
Ten years is a big deal. Congratulations. Mount Hillyer is a favorite. I like the campground at the starting point. Horseflats I think
Horse flats is right. That was blocked. We went a little further down the road and found a back way in. Lovely path through a golden meadow.
My warmest, warmest congratulations and many interesting long roads for your car ahead. Great text, amazing photo.
Thank you so much, Irina.
Happy anniversary. May you continue you continue to enjoy your journeys together.
Thank you, Roberta.
