111111

We should commemorate today because it's Veteran's day. We should commemorate the date if only because it happens just once a century.

If you head up to Memorial Park at Walnut and Raymond today at 10:30 you can be part of the Veteran's Day commemoration. I predict music, a flyover and no rain. But don't try getting anything done at the library or City Hall. All city offices will be closed.

As for the date, I suggest you Google 11/11/11 and find all the fun stuff. There's history, numerology and predictions.

I like to think those sets of ones are auspicious. But I'll leave the details to the numerologists, the predictions to the soothsayers and the Nigel Tufnel jokes to you.

love the columns...sad to think the huge space they must have been part of is now split into two levels.

Headed to Applebee's later for lunch...Dad gets to eat free because he's a veteran. The other four of us will be paying ;)

I don't know that it wasn't always two levels, BD, but even if not: I believe the Disney Stores offices are still in there, and their architects did an interesting job with the interiors.

I'm glad your dad gets a free lunch. That's nice of Applebee's. I wonder if other such deals are going on today. I hope so.

I don't think I'll google that date, just enjoy it. I even liked 11/1/11. I'm glad you told me about the libraries -- I was headed in that direction.

That's an excellent photo to go with a once-in-a-century date. Maybe I'll write lots of checks today just for the fun of dating them.

It's a good day to cozy up in a library corner and read. We'll have to do that in our homes, offices and coffee shops, however.
Maybe the fact that libraries are closed is why the librarians chose this weekend to have their convention.

Bellis, yes, we'd better write checks. A year from now they'll be obsolete.

What a splendidly elevenish window, Petrea. Well chosen.

Thanks, Dive. I looked through my collection for pictures of elevens and this was my favorite.

So do you have collections of tens, nines, etc. as well? I'd love to see your photo filing system. Not devised by Melvil, I expect. My photo filing non-system is all over the place.

Did everyone hear the vintage bombers flying over at 11 past 11 on the 11.11.11? They rumbled over my house. I can't go to the ceremony in Memorial Park as I'd burst into tears on hearing TAPS. (why is it called that?)

We heard and saw the flyers, Bellis. Part of their route was over our back yard.

I have some eights.

My photo filing system is a mess. I don't like the way iPhoto files, but apparently they all do it about the same way. I haven't found a system that lets me file the way I want to. I would like to label and file my photos the same way I do other files. Anybody?

Here's Wikipedia's article about "Taps." It has the words, which are moving.

Fascinating link, and interesting to compare the British "Last Post" bugle call with the American "Taps." Both originate from the Dutch signal to turn the beer taps off for the night!

Excellent photo!
I thought about both of my grandfathers today, both of whom were in WW I; one fought in the trenches on the front line and the other was part of an ambulance crew for the French troops.

You have an amazing connection to history, Ms. M. I suppose we all do, if we think about it.
