dining room at Castle Green (on a not-so-bawdy day)
More for your calendar!
Thursday evening, October 20th, head out to the Castle Green and support Litfest Pasadena. The evening is called Singing the Bawdy Electric (in reference to Walt Whitman's poem). As Timothy Rutt said on Altadenablog, "every bawdy is invited."
There will be readings by Jonathan Gold, Larry Wilson, Ron Koertge and others. Plus music, food and bawdy surprises to light up even the darkest corners of Castle Green. It's $75 per person or $100 for two (so bring a friend!). Email juliaharm@gmail.com or leave a message on the Litfest Pasadena Facebook page.
Funds raised on October 20th will go towards creating a literary fringe festival that aims to be to the LA Times Book Festival what the Doo Dah Parade is to the Tournament of Roses--more light-hearted, less corporate, a little sillier--according to writer/historian Michele Zack, one of the planners. That fringe-y event is scheduled to take place in Pasadena's Central Park March 17, 2012. But as light-hearted as it may sound it's got literary clout behind it including Michelle Huneven, Jervey Tervalon, Lian Dolan, the director of Pasadena Public Library Jan Sanders and too many more to list here.
By the way, the 20th is also the day of the Great California Shakeout. If you want to know if and how that relates to the Bawdy Electric, you'll have to come to Castle Green Thursday night.
Update: Today, 4pm at Webster's in Altadena: Poetry and Wine!

Now that sounds like my kind of event! Since I can't attend I would, please, like to have a bawdy word-for-word report.
With the yellow walls, the long windows, and the round table, this room reminds me a bit of Monticello, the home of my favorite President, Thomas Jefferson.
I expect to be there taking pictures, Speedway, so I will do my best.
I've never been to Monticello, Tracy, but I expect this room is where the only resemblance is found!
What fun! And what a splendid room in which to be bawdy.
I can't wait for your report (with pictures).
I happened to have this photo but there are other great rooms. The lobby/lounge is splendid, you can just see Graham Greene there traveling with his Aunt. It's very 1920s Panama. Or something. Anyway I'm sure it'll be decked out Thursday.
I hope you, too, will be invited to add your comedic and literary clout to the fringe festival in March. Looking forward to it already!
Sounds like a cool event. You could probably make a bawdy dress out of these sheer Castle Green curtains. I guess I should sign up for the Shakeout, as I live a block from a fault line.
There's no shortage of things to do around Pasadena! Enjoy photographing the festivities, Petrea.
It's going to be a fun festival no matter what, Bellis. Thanks for your vote of confidence.
Katie, that's so Scarlett O'Hara of you. (The curtains, not the fault line.)
Shell, it's impossible to keep up all of a sudden. I thought summer was quiet but all hell has broken loose.
Photographing the event? I think that's swell!
Wish me luck. Shooting in the dark.
I attended a Great Shakeout at Caltech a few years ago. We were in the "Earthquake media Room", the one where Kate Hutton and Lucy Jones give us the lowdown when there's a real earthquake. At a signal, we and all the media had to hide under the furniture and pretend it was a real earthquake. Someone started giggling, and we all collapsed in hysterics.
Hee! I love the picture you paint. An earthquake's not funny, but a bunch of journalists hiding under furniture and giggling is hilarious.
