The Particulars

Who: would be so negligent as to lose their library card? Uh, that would be me.

What: This is the dome of Pasadena's City Hall reflected in a window of the Central Library.

When: During the month of September, you can renew a lost library card for free. Usually it's $10.

Where: 285 E. Walnut St, Pasadena.

Why: Because I like it. Not the library card. I mean yes, I like the library card (or I will when I get it). But the picture. I like the picture. And the library. City Hall, too.

That's a fabulous photo, Petrea. Beautifully framed.
Three cheers for libraries … and reflections.

I wish government would/could convey information as succinctly and with as much good will and humor as you do, Citizen Petrea.

And the photo is inspiring.

you LOST your library card? I've had my LA County card for 26 years now

Of course I also have two neighboring counties...Ventura and Orange so don't mind me ;)

love the reflection

A picture like that would make a good library card image -- a hologram of the library and some palm trees.

In my small town, the library card is $0. However, if I want to use the county library, it would cost me $85. Go figure. I got a card to the university library and the state library instead.

Thank you, Dive. I'll paraphrase a famous British blogger by saying it was already framed for me, being a window and all.

Dina, thanks. I think they're trying very hard to cover all their bases and I just don't have as many bases as they do.

Book Dragon, I have my Burbank and my Beverly Hills and I don't know what else (probably not good anymore). But I lost my Pasadena card! They let me check out books with my number, but it would be easier for us all if I had my card. So I'm getting a new one this month.

Speedway, there are good shots of the library with its palm trees. This is a favorite from All Over Pasadena, a new daily photo blog in town:

Are holograms expensive? We might not get one if that's the case, at least not soon.

'The Particulars' sounds like the title for an animated movie about a family of very fussy OCD superheroes who come into your home to dust and straighten everything all the time.

Tune in at 8pm PST tonight.

So which window has that amazing reflection? You've captured something that the founding architects and designers wanted to achieve when they envisaged the Pasadena civic center. Myron Hunt, George Ellery Hale, take a bow!

I always confuse my Pasadena library card with my Caltech staff card because the building views on both look so alike. And hey, Hale was the aesthete in chief behind them. All hail to Hale!

Speedway, I would watch a movie about OCD superheroes! OCD is not fun, it's a serious problem, but a very interesting one.

MG, I'm listening right now. Hoping these people can stop complaining and insulting and start having something to actually say...
Don't know how long I'm going to give it.

Bellis, you and your crush on Hale!

Beautiful card. Glad you're getting a new card. I recommend Cleopatra, the newish biography by, I think, Stacy Schiff. Very fun.

I think, like any other printing project, the cost of a hologram depends on its complexity, the material being used and the number being printed.

Petrea Burchard said...

Margaret, I should check out that book. When I played Cleopatra years ago I read everything about her I could find. She is one of history's most fascinating characters.

Speedway, it's probably going to be a plain old card. I'll be lucky if it's plastic.

I like the picture, too! Very cool.

lovely shot!

I suspect hologram cards would be beyond the City budget. However, am sure the system could print something like this just as easy as they do your data on the other side of the card!

and like Speedway, some of our local libraries are still free, but others charge between $70 and $90 a year now to have the privilege to check out books from our municipalities. That's about what I'd be spending if I bought and traded books...so yeah, I'm not visiting the charging libraries anymore.

I have to second what Dina said---would be nice if gov't could figure out how to clearly convey things as you do.

wv: skinorgi...I'm just soooo not going to go there!
