Mt. Wilson Week: Cosmic Cafe

You probably won't go to the Cosmic Cafe* first. You'll probably walk around the grounds and check out the views--wear yourself out a little. That is, if you drove up. Some people hike, so they come pre-worn out. I wouldn't recommend hiking on a hot day; the trail is long and (necessarily) uphill, and it doesn't have much shade.

The first thing you'll see upon your approach to the Mt. Wilson Observatory, no matter which way you arrive, is this impressive set of towers. They mostly serve Los Angeles-area radio and television stations. This view of them is from the Cafe.

Two of us had their excellent hot dogs. A third had the hummus and didn't finish it, so I finished it for her. Piggy.

The Cosmic Cafe is popular and super-casual. Folks wear their hiking clothes. Dogs are welcome (there's a dish for them, too). Nothing fancy but the views.

*The Cafe is only open on weekends.

Woah! Petrea, that hummingbird shot is breathtaking.
So nice of the Cosmic Cafe to think of birds and dogs as well as paying humans.

nothing fancy but the view? That view can be pretty awesome!

I love the hummingbird!

I've got a picture of The Cafe at the End of the Universe at the Griffith Obs. but I guess that only means something to Douglas Adams fans.

I agree, Dive, it's wonderful that they provide refreshment for birds and dogs as well as people.

Maybe so, Book Dragon, but who's not a Douglas Adams fan?

That stuff in the background looked to me like a launch pad at first sight. Goes well with the humming bird.

Thanks, Vanda.

I have to agree that the hummingbird shot is amazine. Well done. I always love someplace that allows me to bring my dog. Sounds fun.

Well-behaved dogs are even allowed to wander (on leash) inside some of the display rooms. It's a very laid-back place.

What a photo! The Stars and Stripes flying to honor the wonders of American engineering, and the hummingbird flying to honor the wonders of evolution. And what blue, blue sky up there.

I was happy to see that the Cafe takes credit and debit cards, because I hike with very little money. Now I can earn my appetite by hiking up from Sierra Madre, and pig out on burgers and fries. I've never actually done the climb, but the cafe could motivate me (so long as a car was waiting to drive me back down)..

Wow, thanks, Bellis.

I'd like to make the climb someday. I'd be so proud of myself.

I just saw on the website that the cafe is only open on weekends, so I added it to the post. Don't want to do a 7-mile uphill hike on a Thursday with that hot dog in mind, only to be disappointed.

Surely you'd leave Boz behind? He'd be a very hot dog at the end of the climb.

Petrea Burchard said...

Boz would never make it up the hill. He had to sleep a whole day after walking around on the flat, shady paths!

I love seeing the hummingbird against all the towers and the flag! Great capture. The Cosmic Cafe sounds like a cool place.

Always enjoy visiting this website. So great to see the Cosmic Cafe getting some publicity: weekend refreshments are available for hikers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, drivers, and the just plain hungry. You might have enjoyed taking one of the weekend tours of the observatory; information is posted at the Cosmic Cafe. Consider joining the Friends of Mount Wilson Observatory (FOMWO) so that public access can be increased even more! (Information is at www.mtwilson.edu.)

Thanks, Anonymous! You beat me to it. I'll be posting that link to the Friends again tomorrow.

There used to be a dive in Japan/ Downtown called the Atomic cafe. A gathering point for the first generation of downtowner loft dwellers. X and Screamin J Hawkins ruled the jukebox.
