Wild on Walnut

When East of Allen's Michael Coppess emailed me about the wildflowers on Walnut, I knew just what he was talking about. A couple of blocks' worth of beautiful flowers are opening up along the north side of the street between Kinneola and Daisy Avenues, and he thought I might like to photograph them. Did I ever. Thanks, Michael.

It's an industrial area, where artist's studios mix with factories (and flowers, apparently). I like it. There's not much traffic except the cargo carriers that cross an old train trestle parallel to the road.

You really ought to go over there while the flowers are blooming. There's way more going on than I could fit into one picture.

And here, I've always gone up to the Poppy Reserve in Lancaster to see them!

Absolutely gorgeous!

That was not what I was expecting when I first saw "Wild on Walnut" but I think it has something to do with living near the City of Walnut...and too many late-night infomercials.

Beautiful flowers, and much closer than Lancaster

Thanks for the comments, I'm glad there was a dragon too ;)

Ooooh … I love California poppies.

They are prettier than the pylons.

Such a nice mix of hard and soft.

Nice colors in this one.

Well, J.J., there are a lot more in Lancaster. But the sidewalk along Walnut is new!

Book Dragon, you made me laugh. Some pretty wild infomercials.

California poppies love you, too, Dive.

True, Steffe. I was going for a juxtaposition kind of thing, but it's not as obvious as I'd hoped.

Or maybe you saw it, Dina.

Thank you, Birdman.

By the way, Birdman, I should mention that I didn't enhance or in any way mess with the colors here. That's what they look like.

I planted a handful of poppy seeds on Halloween and now have a riotous mass of them in my front planter.

They are precious - love 'em!

It's eye-popping. I hand't noticed the blue ones.

Urban wildflowers!!! Love the contrast between the gorgeous color of the flowers and the cold steel of the towers!!!

(And much closer than Lancaster...which by the way...is where the Chief is today!!! but not to view the wildflowers!!! A dreary district conference of some sort...had to get up at four this morning to get there and went with several others...)

Petrea, how gorgeous!

Did you know that Ben McGinty's fondest wish was to procure a seed spreader and plant poppy seeds on that lot across from Ralphs on Lake Ave. and in the old Scripps lot? The Altadena Arts Coalition was trying to get some man-power involved but just couldn't get people to care enough to actually help. Maybe he'll try again.

Wow - I had no idea! THanks for the heads up.

Those are stunning!

Next fall I will have to remember to throw out a bunch of poppy seeds into the more wild areas of my yard.

I've just been to take a look, and it's incredibly, wondrously beautiful, especially with the honey scent of alyssum filling the air. The flower border stretches a long, long way. I hope everyone will head over there, as it's a sight not to be missed. Wonder who paid for it?

Petrea Burchard said...

There's a lot of magenta, too, and lilac blue, and other stuff. I didn't manage to get it all in one shot.

Michael was also wondering about Bellis' question'; he put the word into the Pasadena PIO and is waiting to see what she knows.

JJ: The poppy preserve is fantastic. We've been several times.

Petrea: Purty.

That's a beautiful photo! Still don't know who is responsible for this.

Petrea Burchard said...

Thanks, Michael. Thanks again for the tip.

Something tells me it might be a good time to go to the poppy preserve.

Yes, everybody go, go, go. If you can't get to the Poppy Reserve, this is our own little substitute.

While I was there I saw some guys playing Frisbee across the street--under those electric towers!--on their lunch hour. Fun is where you make it.

What a great find. I'm too late for a weekend visit but I'll get over there sometime this week. Thanks for the heads up.
