Precipitation

Because it's Saturday I considered showing you pictures of outdoor activities like hiking and biking. But because we expect thundershowers all weekend, that would be cruel. And because I don't have a picture of someone reading by a fireplace in a cozy nook, here's a picture of petals from a Pink Cloud Flowering Cherry tree settling in a puddle. You follow my logic.

I know it's a Pink Cloud Flowering Cherry tree because that's what it said on the tag I found on one of the trees lining Palm Terrace. You'd think palm trees would line Palm Terrace and you'd be right. But so do Pink Cloud Flowering Cherry trees. Now's the time to see them, if the rain doesn't knock all the petals into the snow.

The weather reports say it's possible we'll have snow in elevations as low as 500 ft today. That's about the elevation of my front yard. It's been about 62 years since the last time that happened, which was not only before I moved here but before I was born. The only snow I've seen in ages has been the snow on the mountains. Pretty, but not exactly touchable from my place.

I'm seeing lots of newly planted Pink Cloud Flowering Cherries lining the roads of Pasadena all of a sudden, or is that just because they're not noticeable unless in bloom? The pink clouds of blossom looked so pretty in the rain yesterday. But how disappointing to wake up and not find snow! When's it due?

Green grass and pink petals -- what's not to like? No snow to speak of in the SF area either, but it was fun seeing the local media get all worked up over the possibility.

Did you get hail, Bellis? I got pictures. The sun's out now and that hail will be gone in moments.

Katie, do they do "Stormwatch 2011!" with catchy logos and theme music? We get that here, too.

Of all the times for the Mount Wilson Tower webcam to be down! I can't see the mountains from here so will have to take the car out for a look at the mountains. No, no hail down here - we're in the balmy south of Pasadena.

We had snow up here, somewhere between the sky and ground. For about 20 minutes. Long enough to make everyone giddy.

Several neighbor families loaded their kids in the cars and headed up to Altadena today for a romp in the snow.

Criminy, folks, I'm so looking forward to flowering cherry trees. We had 4 inches of ice build-up in places from the snow and sleet a couple weeks ago, then a spike in temperatures which melted the snow. Now, it's cold again with a slurry of sleet and snow on the ground. So dreary. But I do see buds on the maple trees outside. There is hope.

it snowed in the Hollywood hills

Love that WV, Speeday.

I don't know what to think about that, PA. On the one hand, it snowed 6 inches here in 1949. On the other hand...

Woo hoo, it snowed on the 5 freeway in Burbank at 4 pm. As soon as it hit the car windows, it went all slushy. I was quite worried that drivers wouldn't know how to drive safely in the layer of slush, but within minutes we were back in bright sunshine and out of danger The skies were really dramatic today!

Your photo is so interesting today, though at first I thought the water was an oil spill (too much in the news about oil again). Your camera shows close-ups in really sharp detail, doesn't it?

I felt like a kid again this morning when I looked out the window hoping to see snow on the ground. Of course there wasn't any but it was fun to imagine.

Pink Cloud Flowering Cherry - I love that name.

Bellis, the Canon is a bit larger and heavier than the Olympus, but if I will just carry it, the photos always have more depth and detail.

Thanks, Aysegul. Ah! This must mean a new post from you!

Susan, you're just going to have to move to Altadena.

actually, it did snow in Pasadena in 1976. No real accumulation, but it did snow. Stood out front of my grandparents house and watched the flakes fall thru the spotlight on the drive with them.

and, I hear y'all got the snow we were expecting...all we got were a quick hit of flurries, not even as much as that cold night in 1976. Oh well! pretty amazing weather!
