The Backsides

I like the backsides of places
no one expects you to look

where the old curtains are hung, if any
where they paint one less layer because it's cheaper
where ducts spit hot dust onto dead grass
where rusty, unwanted things wait by the trash

because that's what's really happening.

Wonderful post with photo and prose... It makes me want to go around the house to see how it looks from the backside

Hummmm... interesting comment, Mr. Earl

Aw, it's not really a poem, just not grammatically correct. Thanks, Dina.

Hi Deb, wasn't that fun? Margaret's the best. Thanks for coming by.

Mister Earl, I knew that was a risky title. I'll bet I get a spike in visitors today.

Merci, Genie.

I really love this photo! The subject is fascinating and the composition is perfect. I especially like how my eye is drawn in a zig-zag path from the sunny blue sky to the blue building to the dark shadow and back to the sun highlighting the cool peeling paint on the garbage bin. And the rusty whateveritis adds a great punch.

and if you're following Karin's posting about tennis shorts...;-)

tho I do enjoy your version---lots to look at and enjoy here too!

I'm fascinated by rusting machinery too, wondering what on earth it was used for, what kind of factory was there once. Entropy! Great word, so much energy in just seven letters.

I find myself standing by the trash quite a lot. Are you trying to tell me something.

Petrea Burchard said...

Thank you, Katie. I, too, am enamored of the zig-zags.

Trish, I'm not a sports fan but I enjoy a good backside where I find it.

It could just be an apartment building, Bellis. Entropy is probably my favorite word.

Are you waiting for something there, Margaret?

Thank you so much for the comment. Glad to find you, true.

"where ducts spit hot dust onto dead grass"...I like that line

It evokes memories of those little brick encased garden beds you sometimes find in front of store fronts. Where the only plant life your likely to find are a few palm seedlings; maybe the withered remains of a bulb.

Thank you, Irina. :)

Merci, Ms. M. Glad you like it.

And "horse tails," PA. Is that what you call them? The long, skinny plants that don't need a lot of water. People like those around here.

That looks like an old muffler... you never know what people have back there. Is this considered snooping? If so, I like it.

Petrea Burchard said...

The gate was wide open. I didn't tresspass. I was virtually invited.

I think it's a muffler, too.

I like the mellow yellow light on the peeling paint. Backsides show the lived-in state. I like that too.
