Fire Station 31

The Altadena Hiker called it an "excellent adventure" and it was. She, Bellis and I had long planned to visit Castle Green on Sunday for the annual Christmas open house. The closest parking lot was full and each of us had walked some distance to get there. But as the line snaked out into the street and another bus pulled up in front of that lovely old building, our enthusiasm dampened.

I hope they made a lot of money and had a great time, but shuffling through the halls shoulder to shoulder with a packed crowd wasn't what we had in mind.

So how did we end up at Fire Station 31 and what did we find there? The story and more photos are on Overdog. And don't miss the Hiker's take on the tale.

I can't express how much I wish they still drove around in fire engines like the vintage one in your Overdog photos, Petrea.

Love this story. Especially the picture of you and Bellis and the firefighters. HOT

Neat photo. I like the yellow curly wire; it looks like a fun decoration, but I bet has a useful purpose. The Fire House tour sounds a lot better than crowded Castle Green one. Thanks for all the additional photos of your exciting day out!

Yes, that's the one I intended to take.

Someday soon, I'll visit the Rockettes' dressing room and take lots of pictures for my blog!

The top photo on Overdog is stunning. And I like the ending - looks like the firemen got to go to Castle Green after all. Hope it was just someone fainting because of the crowds.

Good morning, everyone. I don't have anything to add; you're all very funny today.

The ambulance run you saw was probably more typical of a firefighter's day than an engine run. As the fire codes have been in place, followed and/or improved, over the years the number of fire runs are about 20-25%, while ambulance/rescue runs are 75-80% of firefighters' work.

The men and women are continually taking classes to maintain/improve/upgrade their work, which, in most cases, is to save us from ourselves. A great many are also endurance athletes, both to improve their own job performance and to support their brothers, should a problem be encountered.

Years ago, I wore a boyfriends' turnout gear to work for Halloween. While I was in good shape then, by noon I was drenched in perspiration, more from the weight of the gear than its being heavy Nomex. Whew! Hot work in more ways than one!

It was definitely fun. I don't mind it when plans go amiss, as long as I have my camera. It doesn't hurt to have a couple of good friends along, too.
