Zen Monday: #112

Zen Monday is the day you experience the photo and give us your thoughts rather than me telling you what I think the photo's about.

I look for a photo worth contemplating or, failing that, something unusual or silly. And unless I absolutely must say something I stay out of the comments box to avoid influencing the discussion.

There's no right or wrong. We're here to have fun.

A lovely photograph,
the pale ladies on the porch need to get out into the sunshine.

Bartholomew hoped his new lady friends would sing him some porch songs.

Greek Revival cottage.

It really needs two tall bushes on the left side. Symmetry is what this place is all about, and it makes me a little woozy to have the balance thrown off like that.

They seem to be giving you the cold shoulder and they appear to be stone-faced as well. You will get no back-talk from them either. Sticks and stones will not break their bones.

Fed up with complaints from the neighbors in Malibu, the Getty Villa moves to Pasadena.

It's all Greek to me.

There should be a fountain and pool in the front yard to go with the Greek maidens.

I can never predict the Zen Monday reaction. Sometimes I think a photo will get no comments and people go crazy over it. Sometimes I think people will have a lot to say about a photo (like this one), and it gets just a few comments.

I have to say, however, that those of you who commented today contributed brilliant jokes, puns, riffs, literary references and even gardening ideas.

Thank you all for joining in today. I peek all day to see what's new and I love every bit of it.

I loved it! Could have added more, but had to restrain myself. I've driven by this house a few times and had to be careful not to crash at the sight. Perhaps they're related to the statues that the Getty had to return to Italy?

Whatever made you think you should restrain yourself, Bellis? Let's hear what you've got.

I'm late but it's still Monday so here's my Zen: I'd love to live in that yellow house.

Petrea Burchard said...

Susan, in the language of Zen Monday, there is no "late."

Makes me really, really want to see the back yard! (wink).

The first thing that came in to my mind was, "Petrea got a picture of the old man's house from the Pixar movie, "Up". But then I saw the statues...

been fighting internet issues in my neck of the woods...just catching up.

at first glance, reminds me of the old *Big Yellow House Restaurants*. I believe the original one in Santa Barbara closed down finally a while back. Many years ago there was one in Monrovia just off the 210 at Huntington. Across the street from what used to be HoJo's (now I think a Courtyard/Hilton)I think a Shell and Office Depot moved in a few years ago where BYH was. But I don't recall the statues and certainly, they would have balanced the shrubbery! ;-) Every so often I miss a meal of everything covered in country fried gravy for not much $$. The photo puts me in the zen spot of smelling all that fried food and smiling about my grandparents who were usually the ones to take me there...I think I can hear my arteries hardening right now! ;-)

I'll bet the back is as trim and neat as the front, Toemailer.

Ben, that house would never have gotten off the ground.

Trish, I always thought the one in Summerland was the only one. It was open last time I went through there but it's been about a year.

As for the bushes, there are two bushes on the left side of the porch, they're just not as lush as the other two. I wonder what happened.

Petrea---there used to be "a bunch" of them...25-35 years ago? ~ish? the one out in Monrovia was the closest as I recall. Used to have several off the 10 on the way out to San Bernardino area (back before the 210 was even open much of anywhere really). Not sure if the others were actually related to Summerland or knockoffs. Had heard the original one in Summerland closed after the matriarch died...but I don't have valid info on that. I do think that was about as close to southern cooking as we had here in California. Am amazed it went over as well as it did, considering in the 70's all the "California cuisine" was such the rage and country fried gravy isn't included in much of that CA cuisine!

And I did see the bushes...but looks like the sun overdid it and they maybe had a lack of water....still unbalanced..and for Zen Monday...life must be balanced...right? ;-)
