A guy finds a shady spot on a sunny day so he can set a spell. He leans his back against the cool cement and closes his eyes for a moment. When he opens them, he might whittle a little something if he finds a good stick. He might play a sweet tune on his harmonica.
Or he might check his email on his smartphone.

Nice.
I stopped whittling sticks in my spare moments once I got an iPhone 3G. Now I while away the time by reading the comments on Pasadena Daily Photo.
So far today, Bellis, it should be easy!
Cool photo. Maybe that's Don Draper on vacation in Pasadena.
The theme today may be "bars." The bars of the balcony, the number of bars in the harmonica tune, how many bars left on the 'phone, and barring anything else ... I'll just go for a long swim.
You might not be too far off, Katie. They shoot a bit of Mad Men here.
Speedway, if you weren't such a hoot I'd have to bar you for over-punning.
Ha ha. Love that ending. I took Tommy on an early morning walk on Colorado Blvd and noticed a sign at Banana Republic for a Mad Men casting call. A bit of synchronicity. Check it out: http://madmencastingcall.amctv.com/
I lURV this one P. I like the first two scenarios!
My guess is he's a young hipster texting. I'm not fooled by sepia
Great to start out the day with a laugh.
Great link, Susan. Doesn't "walk on" look like "extra" in this case?
Virginia, this does seem like your type of shot. Let's find him a good stick and have him whittle a harmonica out of it.
Me neither, PA. Especially since I walked up the ramp and got a look at him after I took the photo.
Glad you enjoyed it, Michael.
It's a totally cool picture and affirmation that black and white has its place in the universe, still.
I'm going with checking the email on his phone, or sending a text. That is the whittling of the 21st Century.
Thanks, Anne. In fact I don't think this one would work in color at all.
Steve, has no one considered the possibility that he might be using an Etch-A-Sketch? Or doing his nails?
Ha! Steve's funny!
Nice lines, nice shadows, nice lighting, nice subject. This is one of your all time bests. Well done. This one belongs in the portfolio.
I agree.
Glad you guys like it. It was fun to make this one.
Yes, "walk on" sure does look like "extra." Pretty good gimmick: buy an expensive Banana Republic Mad Men outfit for the slight possibility you'll get chosen to be an extra on the show. And there's no glamour in being an extra.
I've met several professional extras (background performers) during my career, and no, it's not glamorous. But it does require some knowledge. I imagine one day on the set is enough to cure most people of stars in their eyes.
Brilliant photo. Life story behind it.
Hello, Irina, thank you for visiting. I'm glad you like the photo. I guess we all make up our own story for it.
