Nesting in Limbo

Nest Furnishings may look like it's going out of business, but it might take a while. The store is located at 680 E. Colorado Blvd. on the southeast corner of Colorado and El Molino, where plans for the new IDS Playhouse Plaza building project have stalled.

The proposed building apparently exceeds city size requirements. The City Council initially waived those requirements but a group of residents, including former City Council member Sid Tyler, filed a lawsuit that has put the project on hold. The Council created a committee to review ways to bring the project down to size and I'm sure we'll hear more about it soon.

In the meantime, there's a wide variety of stock roosting at Nest. The prices are decent. I have no idea how long it'll all be there and I bet the store owners don't, either.

Nest, once the store of J.H. Biggar, Furniture, across Colorado stood the Crown Hotel (now Vromans) held an 8 x 8 foot storefront...I.M. Smaller.

The furniture display at Nest appears manufactured off-shore.

(not that there is anything wrong with that)

Well, at least the owners have somewhere to sit while they wait in limbo.

Thanks for highlighting this project. While there has been a good deal of work done on modifying the building itself, there has not been a lot of work done on the traffic plan. El Molino is a really narrow street. Really not sure how much more traffic it could hold.
Fun seeing the curvy lines of the chairs with the angles of the room.

Funny story, PJ.
How can you tell where the furniture was made? I can't tell. If you step inside you'll see items of varied quality. No high-end, but nothing awful either.

Hee hee, Dina. Along with all of their ancestors and descendants.

I don't know enough about this project but I agree about traffic, Roberta. El Molino should not be a heavy traffic street, at least not at that corner. There's barely enough room for two lanes of cars.

As for the building itself, the current structure doesn't look like much. But I hope we don't put anything too big on that spot. We've already got the Trio apartments kitty corner and that jars like a bad memory you just can't forget.

Bellis sends this link to the West Pasadena Residents Association Newsletter. Page 8 has an article on the subject by Sid Tyler.

so, do what one NorCal town does---limit the above ground building, but allow nearly unlimited underground building. We know one home has 1500sqft above ground and 3700sqft UNDER ground. yes, really.

it would probably resolve any HVAC issues to have a theater below grade---given the right situation, you could keep it a cool 55F degrees most of the time, reducing costs further!

Pascal Jim...lol on the JH Biggar store...fun to remember the old storefronts and buildings, vs the 'updated' stuff.

Maybe they could put a few soccer fields underground as well?

Nesting doesn't sell; not in this economy. They might have done better accentuating portability. "Lightest furniture in town."

Trish, here in earthquake country, fear alone might put that plan through years of red tape hoops.

Then again it is cooler down there, making Anon's plan for underground soccer fields sound downright tantalizing.

Not even with 50% OFF!!!, Hiker?

I read this post just before leaving work, so I stopped at Nest on the way home. I've passed it a million times but never gone in. That store is huge! It was fun finding the spot where you took the photo, fun to read about the store too.

Looking at your photo again, it could be the upper floor of Vroman's readied for a book signing.

That's a lot of chairs.

And I'll bet you didn't buy anything either, did you, Susan? My neighbors got a great dining room set and I think they got the last good one.

Better get there early, Bellis, or you'll have to sit in the rafters.

Margaret, you're just being nice.
