Abundancia

photo inspired by John Sandel

There's always something to photograph at the Saturday Farmers' Market at Victory Park. Yesterday everyone was exclaiming over the purple peppers (near the top of the photo) at the Jaime Farms booth.

We shopped all around the market: peppers, zucchini, eggplant, broccoli, arugula, freshly baked bread, peaches, granola and fresh swordfish. You can also buy oils, plants, beef jerky, cheese, olives, and a lot of other things I'm forgetting. The only way to get fresher produce is to grow it yourself (or to have a generous neighbor who gardens).

We ate our peaches for lunch and had the fish and broccoli last night. We're going to make a ratatouille this week; I was inspired by the Altadena Hiker. I probably won't take pictures of mine. I'm not the Julia Child disciple she is.

There's a new Farmers' Market in town called the South Lake Avenue Summer Farmers' Market. It happens every Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 pm until September 29th in Shopper's Lane at Del Mar Blvd. And don't forget the Tuesday market at Villa Parke and the Thursday market at Robinson Park (also 'til September; check out the Pasadena Farmers' Markets here).

Pasadena has so many Farmers' Markets we could buy fresh produce almost every day if we needed to. But we don't. I didn't have to buy tomatoes for the ratatouille yesterday because we have a generous neighbor who gardens.

Very beautiful photo. Lumineuse! I was in San Francisco last month and was amazed at how many farmers' markets I saw there.

Looks fresh and hot. Aren't they hot?

That's such a yummy photo. You've got me yearning for fresh fruit and vegetables RIGHT NOW. I missed the Pasadena market yesterday, so I guess I'll have to head over to Montrose - unless anyone knows of any other Farmer's Markets on a Sunday?

Bonjour Marie, bienvenue! I'm glad you got to visit San Francisco, it's a wonderful city and a shopper's paradise, whether you're buying produce or shoes or anything else.

Steffen, these peppers are not hot, just the regular tasty kind for salads and stews. Though I haven't tried the purple ones, so who knows?

The Hollywood farmers' market is today, Bellis, and it's a good one. But Montrose is closer. If you can wait 'til Tuesday there's Villa Parke.

There is a small, but lovely, Farmer's Market in Claremont. While you are there you might check out Some Crust Bakery on Yale.
If you take a cooler you can keep your veggies fresh while you take a side trip to Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens.

NIce photo. Ironically, I avoid peppers because I've had some migraines that followed closely on their heels.

Claremont Farmers' Market. Thanks, Roberta.

Okay, Mister Earl, I'll come clean. I think they're pretty but I don't like them very much. They're only okay. And the green ones I actively dislike. I never associated them with migraines, though.

The peppers take on an entirely new dimension when roasted, a sweet taste. When paired with a large, roasted portobello mushroom and grilled cheese on a sandwich -- really yummy!

Gorgeous photo. How did you ever get that moment? No one casting shadows along with that beautiful streak of light

Bellis: also the Alhambra Farmers market. One of the oldest around. Main and Chapel

Ooops...sorry, Petrea, we were taking up some of your parking spaces at the Victory Park Farmers' Market yesterday; it was "set build day" for the Pasadena Musical Theatre Program taking place in the PHS auditorium for the next few weeks. But I did pop over and grab some flowers while I was there!

Speedway, you make an excellent point. I love them roasted.

Alhambra Farmers' Market. Thanks, PA, that looks like a good one. I never knew about it.
As far as the photo, John started taking pictures of the peppers with his iPhone, and I imitated him with my camera, and people stopped reaching for the peppers when the camera came out. I wouldn't have minded some hands in there.

Don't worry, Loren, I never park in that lot. It's a hazard on Saturday mornings, "set build day" or not!

J, it's good to be reminded.

What a glorious photo! You've topped yourself. No small feat.

Years ago (mid-'90s) there was a farmers market at Pasadena City Hall on Thursday afternoons. I still miss that one.

All of Pasadena's farmers markets are inspected and certified by the City of Pasadena, so everhbody can rest assured that all vendors are legit and all produce is fresh.

Love the rich colors in your photo.

Thank you, Margaret, that's sweet! And John gets credit for noticing the shot and the peppers get credit for being so photogenic.

Ann, that sounds great! I assume it was in the courtyard. How perfect.

I've never brought home anything from the farmers' market that wasn't fresh. Except maybe myself, on a hot day.

It was in front of City Hall on Garfield Avenue.

That sounds soooo cool.
