Zen Monday: #100

Here it is. #100.

Welcome to Zen Monday. In case this is your first, allow me to explain:
Zen Monday is the day you experience the photo and give us your thoughts rather than me telling you what I think the photo's about. There's no right or wrong. We're here to have fun.

I look for a photo worth contemplating or, failing that, something odd or silly. Unless I absolutely must say something I stay out of the comments box to avoid influencing the discussion, because when I get in there everything goes down hill.

It's always a challenge, learning how to communicate with a new hair dresser.

I thought the little creature was a leaf or feather before taking a closer look.

Only the ruby-throated hummingbird nests east of the Mississippi River, while you folks have several species of the beautiful little guys to watch at your feeders. A couple weeks ago, I found a dead hummer while I was out walking. I'd had feeders for them on my boat, laughed at their insistent chirps as I cleaned and changed the feeders. I remember when I first picked up the little guy how fine and strong the little bill was and how sad I felt that all the vibrant energy that had defined it had gone. I wasn't aware that my DNR may have been interested in having the specimen and when I went back to collect it, it was gone, perhaps the victim of the homeowner's lawnmower.

Darn it! I was singing "I like Zen Mondays" by the Boontown Rats so loud that I fell off my perch.

But I'm still looking forward to the next 100. Keep 'em coming, Petrea.

Looks like the Monday Morning blues....

This was a strange one. A hummingbird sitting smack dab in the middle of the sidewalk one morning, not...uh...living. The neighbor kids found him and were extremely excited. Of course their mother wouldn't allow them to touch him. None of us could figure out what had happened, how he got there, why he died and why no other critter had bothered him. Maybe the kids interrupted the crime.

Today was actually my 908th post, Desiree (thanks for asking). I didn't start Zen Monday from the beginning, and I've missed some Mondays when we've had a Zen Tuesday and even one Wednesday.

Ben Wideman just had his 1000th post. Go congratulate him!

Hummingbirds generally have a life span of 2-4 years. Could be it's time was just up.

It's sad that it's dead. Looks like a rufous or Allen's, not the common Anna's. Hummingbird males fight fiercely and stab rivals through the chest with their beaks.

By coincidence, a friend put this on Facebook today - it's a behind the scenes of a PBS documentary on hummingbirds:

He was dead? Now I'm sad.

Oh yeah. I think it's sad, too.

There's not much of a telephoto lens on my little Olympus and my good camera's at the shop in Irvine.

I put the camera right next to the bird. The kids and their mom came to get me to take the picture.

The Anna's hummer [she] could have just croaked of natural causes and hit the ground standing like that, but I would bet that she flew into a window and lived for a minute or so after. I have seen it too many times.
