Busch Gardens Pasadena: Sleuthing

I've enjoyed showing you some of the traces of Pasadena's Busch Gardens we discovered on our tour last weekend. It was a special event to benefit Pasadena Heritage, a worthy organization that works to safeguard traces of Pasadena's history. This fencepost and other traces like it might have remained lost if not for the enthusiastic research of Michael Logan and his colleague Gary Cowles. The fencepost is another one of those items from which they literally pulled away the vines (see Wednesday's comments). It's located at the corner of Madeline and Stoneridge Drives.

Bellis was so enamored of the fencepost that she couldn't resist searching for more. (I wonder what that sign says? Probably "Please don't touch the ivy.")

The garden's terraced hillsides can be seen clearly today, especially on Stoneridge Drive just north of Madeline. Here's the Altadena Hiker reminding Bellis that this terraced hillside is on private property. Oh, that zany Bellis!

We had a wonderful time on our tour. Many thanks to Pasadena Heritage, Logan, Cowles and especially our tour guides in the field: the energetic Pat Lambert and our lifeguard, Michael Grady. These people volunteer their time and expertise to educate and entertain us, and to preserve Pasadena's past.

Well now, there's another postcard waiting to happen. I can understand zany Bellis wanting to look for more.

When is the next tour?

That zany, wacky Bellis. We'll all be crawling through that neighborhood seeking traces, I'm sure.

I don't know, Mister Earl, but if you go to the Pasadena Heritage website and sign up for their newsletter you'll be notified. That's how I found out.

These are great photos. I love viewing snippets of your field trips.
I haven't met Mike, but do know Gary. He is a font of wisdom re: all things relating to Busch Gardens and familia Busch, too. He has a real passion for information relating to gardens. Truly a gentleman and a scholar.

Hiker reminding me that the terrace is on private property? Oh, that's rich! She's the intrepid trespasser, I just follow her (unlike law-abiding Petrea).

PS I used to find 6,000 year old arrowheads back in England, now I get excited about a 1900s fence. But it's still the same thrill.

Oh that Hiker is SUCH a rule follower. I"d have been right up in there with Bellis!!!

What a fun tour!!!

I haven't met either of them, Roberta, but they've both certainly done yeoman service to Pasadena.

Bellis, I hope you don't mind me poking a bit of fun. Our intrepid Hiker probably got up those stairs once the eyes of the tour guide were off her.

I think Bellis did find another fence post in there, didn't you, Bellis?

AH is my trespassing mentor.

You can't take Bellis anywhere; she's totally out of control.

What's up with this lovely area of Pasadena and all that Algerian ivy, anyway?

Bellis said...

Petrea, it's OK, I'm man enough to take a poke. (What an odd saying - why does one have to be a man??) And yes, there were several more fence posts, with age on them. I'm glad the ivy hid them from view else they might not have made it into the present.

Just don't turn up any Hantavirus poking around in that ivy!

The Busch Gardens and Orange Crate Art exhibitions were my favorite shows at the Pasadena History Museum. Thank goodness for history slueths

No kidding, PA. I think Bellis is about to become a historical sleuth if she hasn't already. Maybe she can find gainful employment working for the Pinkerton Agency, Cafe.

Hiker, I'm willing to bet all that ivy in the southwest part of town is just one more trace of Busch Gardens, imported for its exotic beauty and whatnot. Just a guess.

Susan, my trespassing mentor will be Bellis from now on. Poking in the ivy is about my speed!

So many hidden treasures! I knew about the tour but wasn't able to go. Thanks for documenting it for us.

Ann, you are a busy woman. They ought to give you your own, private tour! You're welcome.

Thank you for the tour! :)

You all are cracking me up. I so want to go on THIS version of the tour!

Petrea Burchard said...

Tell you what. Ms. M, you and Katie come on down and we'll see if we can retrace our steps. If not, I've got more pictures.

Every place/town needs tours like this, given by those who know and love the place.

Petrea Burchard said...

I agree, Dina. I'll bet Jerusalem has zillions of them.

Margaret said...

I have always wished I could have seen the gardens in their heyday.

Petrea Burchard said...

Me too, Margaret. After the tour we saw one person (not Hiker or Bellis or even me) peeking over fences and totally snooping. I sympathized.

I'm loving this little tour!

Thank you so much, Natalie!

May I contribute this clip? This report was in 1998, when a color Home Movie was found of the 1939 filming of "Gone With The Wind" at the old Busch Gardens grounds in Pasadena!

Javier, thank you! That is delightful. Somewhere in the back of my brain I think I knew that scene was shot at Busch Gardens, but I'd forgotten. Thanks so much for sharing it here.
