Cold Faithful

I spotted this pair outside Zeli Coffee Bar on one of our rainy days a couple of weeks ago. I don't think the dog was cold, really. He had on his fur coat. But you wouldn't have caught me sitting outside that day.

We're expecting more rain today and tomorrow. Maybe thunder and lightning on Saturday. I hope so. We can always use the rain. And having grown up in the Midwest, I miss a rousing thunderstorm. Generally, though, California dogs aren't crazy about them.

What a sweetie. Thunder & lightning - Yeah!

Adorable dog! I hope you get a really good thunderclapper on Saturday. I'm tired of the winter weather so I'm headed off to where there's sun. I'll miss seeing your photos from Pasadena every day, but I'll have fun catching up when I get back in a few weeks!

LOL, shorts in January--yes, it's Pasadena alright! We're getting 4-6 inches of snow today here in mid-Missouri. My memories of Pasadena from December's trip home are fresh, the weather was beautiful! But the beauty of falling snow, it can hardly be described.

Tash, I'm glad you're in this with me. I hope it's a rouser but even a little will make me happy.

Katie, have a great trip! I look forward to your reports.

Hi Dirk! So glad you had a good visit. One of these days you'll have to tell us where you live, so we can make our grand comparisons. (I agree about falling snow.)

Oh, why did humans ever lose their fur? Think of the money we'd save on clothes - and we wouldn't have to worry about spots or wrinkles.

I wish I was wearing shorts. Snowing right now in the Great White North of MN. I will be wearing shorts in exactly 28 more days for spring training baseball, golf, and sun in FL.

Margaret said...

Love the rain. Am enjoying listening to it right now.

Petrea Burchard said...

Dogs probably wonder that about us, Bellis.

Mark, you're going to spring training? Or is that just your way of saying "vacation"?

Microclimates, Margaret. It's not raining here at the moment.

TheChieftess said...

It's not raining here either Petrea!!! Although there's evidence of moisture on the ground!!!

This ol' faithful reminds me of our Daisy...she likes to hang out with me at our neighborhood bakery when I stop by for a piece of quiche and latte! Hmmmmm...that's sounding good!!!

wv: squieddl...the heck if I know what to make of this one...I just think it's cool!!!!

My California dogs hate the thunder! i'm also a midwesterner, and I also miss those "sky is breaking open" kinds of storms.

Clever title -:)

I suspect most dogs are not fans of thunderstorms.

John Sandel said...

OMG, somebody, quick, Margaret's lost her pronouns!!!!

And the dog's thinking: Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Cookie …

I prefer the extremes of weather, too. Dabbling in rain doesn't do it for me. But I guess it's better for the ashen hillsides...

By the way, I love your pun in this post's title!

Petrea Burchard said...

Hahaha. Rain now. Sky not quite breaking open. Dog pissed off though.

Thunder & lightning?! We can hope. :D

We would not have thought this was "cold' weather back in Champaign.

Wilson does not like to wear a jacket, his sister, Mrs. O'Mally loved them. I think I might try a sweater for him, though, as our morning walks are chilly. Maybe something stretchy and less bulky than a jacket...

We are such weather wimps here in SoCal...

Bellis said...

If any of you are at a loose end, not able to go out because of the rain, read this piece that was on the BBC last week - making fun of SoCal folks in the rain, I'm afraid (tee hee).

Ok , well thanks, I've cried over the look on this precious Golden's face. I miss my Baxter.

Call me old-fashioned (no, really, call me old-fashioned, I like it), but I relate much more to the old, white-faced dog than I do to the man holding its leash and an iPhone. I especially love the bandanna around Puppy's neck.

At least it wasn't a Starbucks.

I love this shot, P. You captured such a great little slice of life -- and that pooch is too cute for words. (And your title rocks.)

Petrea Burchard said...

"Slight chance," Amy, but my fingers are crossed.

I haven't tried a jacket on Boz, LL. He might like it, though. He has bald spots in the cutest places. I was cold from birth until I moved to LA, by the way, but that's just me.

Chieftess, you've got that right. I aim to be the champion.

Bellis, that's a delightful piece.

Virginia, I'm glad to have elicited emotion but I didn't mean to make you cry.

Greg, we all relate to the dog in the picture, don't we? No? Well, it's just you and me then.

Thanks, Laurie. I'm a sucker for a sweet pooch.

I don't mind the rain; I mind being rained on!

Here. My sister just sent me this. I was born in Kansas, by the way:

65 degrees:
Arizonans turn on the heat.
Folks in Kansas plant gardens.

60 degrees:
Californians shiver uncontrollably.
People in Kansas sunbathe.

50 degrees:
Italian & English cars won't start.
Guys in Kansas hit the links for 18 holes.

40 degrees:
Georgians put on down coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats.
People in Kansas drive with their windows down.

35 degrees:
New York landlords finally turn up the heat.
People in Kansas throw on a long-sleeved shirt.

30 degrees:
People in Miami all die.
Kansans close the windows.

20 degrees:
Californians fly away to Mexico .
People in Kansas fire up the grill for a cookout.

Zero:
Hollywood disintegrates.
The Girl Scouts in Kansas are selling cookies door to door.

10 below zero:
Washington DC only has hot air in the capital and the white house.
People in Kansas let the dogs sleep in the garage.

20 below zero:
Santa Claus abandons the North Pole.
Kansans get upset because they can't start the four wheeler.

30 below zero :
ALL atomic motion stops.
People in Kansas start saying... "Cold enough fer ya? "

40 below zero:
Hell freezes over.

Well Petrea...I think your sister wins today's prize!!!

Love your photo and the piece your sis sent (I was born & raised right next door, in Missouri :))

Petrea Burchard said...

Yeah, there's nothing blocking the wind out there on the plains.

Shell Sherree said...

Awwww!! He does look a little forlorn, but the big brown puppy dog eyes tend to do that without even trying.

Dina said...

Is that man wearing shorts?? And probably sandals too?
I see the 18 year old soldier boys out here in shirtsleeves in winter (on leave) and want to say to them, "Soldier, don't you have a jacket?!"

In Arkansas the lightning would kill sheep and cows and topple trees on our roof and fry the computers if we didn't unplug in time. I learned to hate thunderstorms.
But hope you enjoy yours.

Petrea Burchard said...

It was probably about 50 degrees out, Dina. To me that's cold, but some people love it. If you have snow that warrants a jacket at least! I'd be bundled in leggings, boots and a couple of down coats.

Dirk said...

Heh, your sister's Kansas humor is right on! Kind of the same here; if it gets up to 50 in the winter the shorts will come out, but if gets down to 70 in August (a rarity, admittedly), people will complain about the cold.

Petrea, as you asked, I live in the state Capitol of Jefferson City, about halfway between KC and St. Louis. Been here with my partner since 1994. I was born in Pasadena and raised in Altadena. Where in Kansas are you from? My partner's from Wichita.

Natalie said...

How cute is that dog??????

Petrea Burchard said...

Dirk, I was born in Lawrence. I don't remember much about it, as we left when I was 3 months old. I went back when I was in my late 20's, but I was only there for about 24 hours. I liked what I saw.
My dad grew up in a tiny Kansas town called Coolidge, which is still tiny.

No kidding, Natalie. It's pretty hard for me to meet a dog I don't like.
