The Best Camera

I never thought I'd leave the house yesterday. We were safe and comfortable.

But during a lull between storms we realized we were out of coffee. At least one person in our household must have coffee at a certain time of day, so a hurried excursion was organized. I grabbed my wallet and iPhone and out we went.

On the way back, because I didn't have my camera, we were treated to the most extraordinary light.

The Canon would have done better. Even the Olympus would have given more clarity. But Chase Jarvis is right. The best camera is the one that's with you.

For information on the soCal flooding and mudslides of the past few days, please check in with Tim at Altadenablog, Debbi at Altadena Above It All and Kathy at KCH blog. This time around I can even recommend a traditional news outlet.

I'm glad to hear you're snug and safe, Petrea. That's a great line of Chase's. And when you have a good eye like yours, that counts for a lot!

Something was calling you to come outside and it wasn't just the coffee. Great reward in the sky.

Not so nice about the mudslides though.

I missed the rainbow, darn it!

I knew there was a rainbow out there somewhere, but darned if I could find it.

Do the people in the white house realize there's a crock of gold in the basement?

Looks like you must've been out on that errand for Boz around 5pmish.

They look good in the small view. Someday we'll have a down-loadable wi-fi chip in our heads so we can take a mental picture if we find ourselves without an SLR.

I keep repeating his line, Shell. It comes in handy.

The sky was indeed a reward, Dina. I like the way you put it. John kept pulling over to take pictures. It was raining a little but he didn't care. He's as bad as I am.

The mudslides have been devastating for those living highest in the hills, from what I can tell. But I was surprised to see the water got so deep that it flooded Melrose Avenue. It came up onto sidewalks and into stores. That's nowhere near the mountains.

Aysegul, my friend Cloudia is a Happiness Coach. One thing she teaches is how to see the good in "bad" circumstances. It's a valuable technique I learned some time ago. (You wouldn't need her, I think you know how to do this.) For example, if someone doesn't show up to an appointment, what do you do with that "wasted" time? For me that's art time. I can use it to take photos or write.
Our trip to get coffee should have taken less than half an hour and it took an hour and a half!

PA, Hiker, rainbows are ethereal escape artists. Not far north of that house I looked for it on the mountains but it was gone.

Cafe, I should never have given Boz caffeine. He is SO demanding.

Good point, Greg. You should probably not enlarge these.

It was coming down in sheets, and then bright sunshine. And what a glorious day today is! I look forward to more photos--

I didn't even think to look for a rainbow.

(Maybe I need a Happiness Coach.)

The colors to these pictures are terrific.

WOW! Pretty soon, all anyone'l need is an iPhone!!! Your first pic took my breath away! And I loved the rainbow...excellent photos! You and your iPhone are all you really need!!!

Soooo, where'd you go for coffee???

Petrea Burchard said...

Going on a photo safari with Vanda today, Des.

K, you seem like a happy guy. Your pictures show a moody side. Don't change that, please.

Chieftess, the clouds were doing it for me. Honestly, the iPhone is fun but did not do these views justice. The view down Colorado Blvd. was an absolute stunner and it doesn't show in the photo at all.

We went to the Coffee Bean on Lake. We wanted a little downtown life.

Amazing photos Petrea. Bummer to hear that the weather has been bad again; hope there mudslides stop soon. At least you were able to get these photos (and coffee). I feel a million miles away here in Thailand, but I had to write as last night we saw some floats that were part of a flower parade (that we missed). I of course thought of Pasadena and you and had to stop by. Take care!

Petrea Burchard said...

Katie, I never think of anyone but myself when I'm on vacation, so I'm especially honored that you thought of us here in Pasadena! I know you got pictures of those floats so I hope we'll see them when you get back. Have a wonderful time!

We actually saw it as a double rainbow (one nested inside the other) walking from our home in Bungalow heaven to the Lake avenue train station.

I wish I would have had my camera with me. Awesome that you got a shot.

Oh, so that is how to get good light!

I went out for a nice dinner and realized I had 3 cameras in my purse. My Canon Rebel for good dinner pics, my Sony Cybershot which I keep in the pocket of my purse, and my new iphone. Oy.

Te new OyPhone. For those moments that elude us …

Hi Gina, welcome. Funny--I wished for a better camera. You wished you had a camera. The Altadanish just wished they could see it.
(Nice blog, by the way. Check out Mendolonium, you guys.)

Then there's Lori Lynn, who had three cameras! It happens when you're an addict. I'm never without at least one. If I take the Canon and my purse, I also have three because the Olympus and the iPhone live in the purse.

J, I have many reasons to love you. One is that you crack me up.

Funny! I did the same thing. It took me forever to get to the store that afternoon because I kept stopping to take photos.

Those are exquisite photos! Glad you had to make a coffee run and that you had some kind of camera with you!

I'm dragging around a 20 pound ( a guess) Canon like it was an extra appendage, day and night and you whip out an Iphone and get these! I'll be damned.

My WV is RIZENN. I hope yo creek ain't rizenn again.

Yep, if it's all you've got it's obviously the best camera.

Nicely done, Petrea. I've linked to your iphone Wednesday this week, too, although I do confess to being more driven by the image than the particular camera, so the assignment to create and "iPhone" image on a certain day of the week only works part of the time for rebellious me. -:)

Hoping you're doing ok with all that water down there!

The water is great, Chuck. Took a hike into Santa Anita Canyon yesterday and enjoyed the river and gushing waterfall. As for the camera, I'm driven by the image, too--but I saved from a couple of weeks ago!
