Theme Day: Best Photo of 2009

The City Daily Photo blog community is having a mid-month theme day called Best Photo of 2009. I know of no dictated criteria such as "best framing," "most skilled lighting" or "strangest physical position from which photograph was taken," so I went through all the photos I posted in 2009 and chose my favorite.

I posted it on June 6th and called it Mountain Sandwich.

Here are links to a few others that contended for the coveted prize--the runners-up for Miss Pasadena Daily Photo of 2009, as it were:

Paths and Passages from February 1st.

Art Night from March 14th.

Under the Engelmann Oak from March 17th.

Norton Simon Museum from March 24th. (March was a good month.)

A Mad Tea Party, from August 4th, was taken by a neighbor. We've never been sure which neighbor--either Lisa or Michelle. They're both brilliant, which is why it's hard to tell.

Things the Light Does from August 23rd.

Each picture I post is joy to me for its own reasons, but these are my favorites from the year. Thanks for sharing them with me. I have so much fun making the photos and posting them. The only thing that tops that is chatting with you all in the comments section.

1134 blogs around the world have hopped onto the City Daily Photo bandwagon. Many are joining in today's Best Photo theme. Check them out.

Cool, gorgeous, wonderful.

I completely forgot about this theme day.

I am so glad you added the links back for more of your favorites. I'm still agonizing (well that's a little exaggeration) over what to post....thanks for the inspiration with all your terrific and interesting shots!

I think I'll go pick one right now.

I love the angle from which you've taken this. It gives equal emphasis to the grass and to that amazing sky. Really works and is a powerful image.

Laurie, you could play tomorrow. But you've got so many good ones it'll take you all day today to pick one.

Lori Lynn, I'm glad you picked one. A good one, too, representative of where you live. What a life! I'm coming over.

Jilly, this was a contender for "strangest physical position" as well.

Thank you, Mo, and welcome!

This photo is absolutely stunning. The colors are vibrant, the lighting is perfect, and the subject and focal point are perfect. It almost has a 3 D appearance. This should be in the California state visitors magazine. BRAVO!

This is the type of photo I love...of emptiness, but full at the same time.

Mark, Saretta, I'll be quoting you for my brochure. Thank you!

Sure do like this one. California with a midwestern flavor.

Love this. It's got a Rothko colorfields-quality to it.

Yes! It speaks volumes. I want to go there now and listen. Great shot!

I like it. It's minimalist, but expressive.

This is a winner.

It was also fun to see the other contenders.

The Mad Tea Party brought a big smile to my face . . . again.

Beautiful photo! It looks rugged - very west coast of you.

I like that it is an accurate portrayal of the City of Pasadena, but it's not obvious.

The photo was taken at Hahamongna Watershed Park. Those interested in protecting this park might want to attend the Pasadena City Council meeting on February 1st, where the Hahamongna Annex Plan is going to be heard. It's been a long and confusing road. Or should I say that road has been wide--some of us would like to prevent a wide road cutting through the park.

In addition to Miss Pasadena Daily Photo, this shot surely must qualify for some sort of Andrew Wyeth award!

Early options for the Hahamongna Annex planning process in 2006 included extending the park road to access a JPL parking lot for weekend use by park users.

The City Council asked staff to evaluate the impacts of such an option in the environmental study when the plan returned to them for adoption.

After strong opposition from the public and the Hahamongna Watershed Park Advisory Committee, the option of a road was not included among the recommendations in the current draft plan.

Like the others, I also love the colors and composition of this one. Beautiful!

I adore stormy skies in that moment where light cracks through long enough to illuminate the grass. I really love it when it's buckeye in the fall.

A fine photo indeed

Thank you, everyone! I'm glad you like the shot.

Ann, the email that's circulating discusses the intended removal of 70 non-native trees, 33 of them along what is proposed to be a 40 ft. wide "path." That's pretty wide for a path, which is where much of the concern comes in, especially when citizen commissions have recommended nothing wider than a 10 foot path.

Why 40 feet? Why the destruction of these trees, so soon after the Station Fire when they're needed for transitional habitat?

I hope many concerned citizens will be there on February 1st to find out the answer to those and other questions.

Lovely light and superb color. Very nice and I'd agree it's a favorite.

This is very fine, Petrea.

Wonderful photo with the glowing foreground and clouds in the background. You take so many good photos, it would be hard to choose only one as the best :)

Yep, this one's a winner! We're due for lots of rain next week, so I'll think of you when I see clouds like this.

Petrea Burchard said...

Thanks, all. Yes, we're expecting storms all week. It should be amazing, cozy, and horrible for wet-averse dogs.

Good choice on the winner - the layers of colors, the framing, the mood - it's a really fantastic photo.

Perfect choice for the Miss Pasadena Photo of 2009!!! I think that your Norton Simon Museum and the Mad Tea Party are close seconds!!! You've done some mighty fine photography this past year!!!

How would one get to the Hahamongna area from Glendale???

Petrea Burchard said...

Thank you, Amy. I lurv it.

Chieftess, you're a doll. I was thinking I'd email you the directions, but maybe others would like to have them, too.

Here's a map of where Hahamongna isin relation to the 210 freeway. It's mostly the empty area in the center next to Oak Grove Park, but the green parts are connected, too.

From Glendale I'd take the 134 east to the 210 west, exit at Windsor Avenue and go north.
You can turn left on Oak Grove Drive and follow it around to the parking lot (across from La Canada High School).
Or you can continue north on Windsor, take the first left at Alberta, then the left fork at La Canada Verdugo, and park at the end.
These are neighborhood streets and the neighbors like it clean and quiet, so park legally and act like you want people to act in your own neighborhood.
(I don't mean you, Chieftess, how could we all hold our standards that high?)

TheChieftess said...

Thanks Petrea!!! Daisy and I'll mosey on up there when the rain passes by!!! My girl scout leader always taught us to leave an area cleaner than when we got there so I promise the neighbors will be pleased!!!
