Fluorescents Be Damned

We had to duck out early on the Mayor's State of the City event last night (actually tonight, as I'm typing this) because I had (have) a migraine. There's Mayor Bogaard on the right, getting ready for his speech. He looks calm and collected, I think.

We stayed long enough to hear my voice-over for the "Charting a New Course" video. John says I sounded good. I'll have to listen again. I think there'll be a link to the video on the public access TV page of the City's website today, or soon.

I very much appreciate being included in the event and I regret the lousy timing--mine, not the Mayor's.

I still say we should ban rhododendrons from working as lobbyists. Let's root out corruption!

Ouch ~ I'm so sorry to hear that, Petrea. Do fluoros give you migraines? A pox on them. Hope you feel better in the morning.

Well the mayor looked a little shaky to me.:) Hope you're feeling better P.

It's no fun to be sensitive to fluorescent lights. It kept me from several career choices - can't teach or work in them day in and day out. I maintain that a lot of children have problems in school because of them. I hope now you're feeling better than the photo.

It was heroic of you to post a photo even though you were in the middle of a migraine. The camera seems to have been feeling pretty rotten as well. I'm looking forward to watching the video when it's available online.

Somehow the pictures seems to really fit your migraine, so I think it's kind of brilliant. Hope you are feeling better.

Ah, that's politicians for you. They become so fuzzy trying to please everyone.

My captcha word sounds like a new drug: cosspoxy.

They might just be people in green, furry coats, sweetie.

Resurfacing!

Some migraines take a couple of days. This one seems to be on its way out. I have pills to take that handle the pain, but they don't handle fatigue and some of the other symptoms.

Shell, fluorescents don't give me a migraine but they're an irritant when I have one.

Thanks, V. And no, it was me and the lights, not the Mayor. He's not a shaky kind of guy.

Paula, have studies been done? I thought it was just me.

Aw, Bellis. I don't know about heroic. Insane, maybe. I've never missed one and I wasn't going to let a little migraine stop me.

Thank you, Margaret. I got more reasonable shots but I wanted to depict my experience.

Cliff, a cosspoxy on you! Well, that's what it sounds like to me, anyway.

Fluorescents be dimmed …?

I hope you recover quickly. But, you did do a nice job on the voice over and it was good to finally meet you.

I've been lurking on your blog for a while, and love it, and finally have to leave a comment...

Your photo looks like my husband says he feels when *he* has a migraine. :)

Glad you went to the meeting (or tried.) I didn't even know it was happening until I read it on your blog.

Petrea Burchard said...

J, is it too late to change my title? I'd rather leave that brilliance to you.

It was good to meet you, too, Michael. One of the pleasures of the evening was seeing people I know and meeting new ones. You're sort of in the middle--a new person I'd met online.

Kat! Thanks for commenting. Welcome to the City Daily Photo blog community! You have no idea what you're getting yourself into. I think you'll have a really good time and your blog looks great.

Kat's is the newest daily photo blog in Pasadena. Check it out. There's always room for more art in this here town.

That makes my eyeballs hurt!

Your post clears up a mystery -- I was positive that I saw you across the room before the proceedings began, but I was so busy running around that I didn't have a chance to approach and chat. Then, when it was over, I looked for you, couldn't find you and decided I had been mistaken.

I'm sorry your evening didn't go better.

I do hope you're feeling good by now, Petrea. Sei gesund.

No, Petrea, it's far from being just you. From what I remember of my Special Education studies it's major cause of dysfunction for many children, particularly in a school setting.

Petrea Burchard said...

Hiker, thank you, I hope to find out Monday.

Ann, we saw you across the room. I knew the thing was coming on so we took seats in the back. I was feeling bad even before we left the house but I really, really wanted to see that video! It was probably selfish of me. I truly thought the lights would be dimmed during the speech. I hope our exit didn't disturb the mayor but I doubt it concerned him much. He was one of the few people in a position to see us leave.

Feeling better, Dina. Funny about a migraine--I'm usually functional in a relatively short time but it takes a two or three days to be completely myself again. I feel sorry for the people who suffer the really severe, constant pain.

Paula, I checked out Wikipedia--not the be all to end all research-wise, but it's a start. The article on fluorescent lighting doesn't go into detail about health issues but they mention "individuals with light sensitivity." The article on
light sensitivity lists several different kinds of light problems, including migraines, relating to fluorescents and--woops!--oh boy--CFLs.

Greg, I read that fluorescents will damage artworks, too. I hope that painting never sees 'em.

Sorry to hear you had a miserable migraine ... hope it's better in the light of tomorrow (today)!

I trust the blurred vision was camera motion and not your migraine induced haze, though I suspect it might have felt similar.......

Petrea Burchard said...

Much better now, Chuck. Thanks.

I didn't mean to take a blurry shot. I did get some that weren't blurry, but they weren't very interesting. This one reflected my experience best.

I agree with Shell Sherree - a pox on them (or cosspoxy if you prefer).
Yes, the photo suits the way you were feeling perfectly.
This is how I see all the time without my spectacles (thank god for automatic focus).
Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Dina said...

Oi, pain. I don't do very well with pain, so it's a good thing I seldom have any. I admire people who can live with it.
Hope your next migraine never comes.

Petrea Burchard said...

I think maybe crosspoxy is what I was feeling, Letty.

Dina, I've decided never to have another migraine.
