Last Day, September 2009

5/29/09, 4:00 p.m.

I have this idea, but it's not my idea. I don't suppose there's any way of knowing who did it first. Monet did it with haystacks. Went back and painted them again and again in different seasons and different light.

8/22/09, 6:01 p.m.

But I'm no Monet. I might be more like Marley of Cheltenham Daily Photo-Marley (as opposed to Cheltenham Daily Photo-Lynn). Marley, a fellow City Daily Photo blogger, started his Changing View posts in September of 2008 and ran them monthly for a year, giving his visitors a busy street corner in all its seasons.

9/11/09, 6:08 p.m.

The most striking example I've seen is this gallery by J?r?me Chom? (that's how it looks at pbase) at pbase.com. I can't stop looking at it. It's the kind of work I want to be able to do.

9/28/09, 10:48 a.m.

I've found a spot I like. I can get there often enough to shoot it in its differing seasons and times of day. I'll stop posting when you get tired of them, which may be sooner, but I'll keep shooting until I get tired of them, which may be later. Last day of the month, starting now.

So, you're beginning a new photo theme thing on the last day?

I'm starting to get tired. But, it's just that time of the month, or day, you know.

Neat idea ~ and if you print out the photos, you can turn them into one of those little books where you flip through fast and it animates them. {I'm sure there's a proper name for them - anyone? I'm not as tired as Cafe but my brain's not playing ball.} So Petrea, have you put a little tape on the ground to help find your spot. :)

Monet also did it for the Rouen Cathedral: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouen_Cathedral_(Monet)

It's a great idea to start a series like that! I need to think about it ;-)

(word verif. is "happyco"! happy company, isn't that right?)

Good idea. I'll join you. My own backyard will show the most monthly change.
How did September pass so quickly??

Super idea P. Maybe I'll do it if I can find a spot I'll like to do over and over. It's finally cooler here so I'll be out more. Your series today is beautiful.

Fabulous photo series! The differences in mood between the photos is actually quite striking. Some people say that CA doesn't have seasons, but that's not true. You just have to be more observant to catch the subtle changes in the trees and grass and sky. I can't wait to watch this scene turn greener again with the winter rains. And Shell great idea to do a flip book once there are enough photos!

Thank you for the Haha update. You're right about the viewing signs -- they'll look ugly in no time. Did you raise that point?

(I like the flip book idea)

The cliché holds that doing the same thing over & over, and expecting different results, is crazy. So if an artist does that and gets different results … have you opened a door into clarity?

"No truth but in things." (But don't tell that to Mr. Keats.)

No ideas but in things?

Love these. You should be able to make such a lovely collection of light.

Yeah, for me, CO. Anyone else who wants to do it, feel free. It's not "mine," obviously.

Shell, I love that idea of a little book. But I haven't put tape on the ground. (I know you're being facetious.) I'm eyeballing it.

Hi Thib! Bienvenue a notre happyco! Et merci. I had so many links already I left out the Cathedral, but I'm glad you gave us the link. Magnifique.

Dina, I'd love a monthly visit to your backyard.

Thanks, Virginia. I recommend taking a look at the links and choosing your favorite, then deciding what elements about it strike you. I liked the trees because of their simplicity, making the variety so striking. Marley's city street shows a different type of variety, of human activity, which can also be a lot of fun. Depends on your personal taste. (It should also be a place you frequent so it doesn't become a pain in the patoot.)

Katie, down here it went from sweltering summer to chilly fall between Sunday and Monday.

I didn't raise the point, Hiker. You have to fill out a card and wait (appropriate, otherwise the meeting would be chaos). I did a lot of listening since it was my first meeting and I am ill-informed.

I think it's an old Chinese saying, J. So maybe the Chinese aren't always right. Or maybe, since I'm shooting in different seasons or times of day, I'm not actually doing the same thing.

Thanks, Linda. Guess I need to go read some Keats now. I can't keep up with world literature, it's way ahead of me.

I love this concept. I love the dusk ones. The morning one looks so stark. Great comparison

I took that morning one the other day when it was foggy, Margaret. I had to go to the San Fernando Valley that day and it was clear over there. From there you could see the huge cloud of mist sitting over the San Gabriel Valley like a chef hat.

What a good idea! (thanks for the link)

I like your take on it and the difference in just these four photos is brilliant. I can't wait to see more :)

Lovely series and wonderful idea! The flip book idea is cool, too.

Linda Dove got it right: "No ideas but in things" was William Carlos Williams, one of the few heroes of realism in 20th-century art. I was trying for a play on "Odes to a Grecian Urn," but fell short.

Of course it's a good idea, Marley, I got it from you! The flip book idea I got from Shell Sherree, Ms. M., so I'll have to give her 10%.

J, you never fall short in my flip book.

Shell Sherree said...

LOL, Petrea ~ I couldn't even remember what it's called ~ after all, 'flip book' is such a terribly complex name. :) The 10% royalty can go to Katie for being the first one in with it!

Great idea! I can't wait to see what your spot is.
