Last night, from our back porch. Flames at left are above Altadena. Small lights at right are Mount Wilson buildings and towers.

What is the sound of one heart breaking?

I've been following this on Laurie's blog and also, of course, on the news. Too awful - take care.

Yes, there are wildfires and earthquakes too, yet we still love living in California.

I've been thinking about you and hoping you're safe; what a terrible thing; an amazing photo. Be safe.

Ciao Petrea, I heard news from California fires even on italian tv. It means there are huge. I hope it will end soon.

J+P, my heart's breaking as well. After storms in North Sydney took down thousands of trees, the people had to have counseling to cope with the loss of their beautiful scenery. I think we need that here. I'm in a state of shock that an entire ecosystem, with thousands of animals, has been lost in just a few days.

Just sad.

Worrying times.

I don't know what that sound is, J, but I know the sound of my heart going out to those who lost their loved ones to this fire. And though I'm awed by their work and dedication, I'm glad you're not a firefighter.

This was the view from our back porch last night. At left, the flames tower above Altadena. At right, the tiny lights are those of the observatory at Mount Wilson. The distance between the two was perhaps a mile. It's hard to tell from here.

I just posted a shot I took from the same spot this morning. It's all smoke, we can't see a thing.

Thank you all. We are safe, just sad.

I can't even imagine seeing a view like that from my porch, and then to not have the view because the smoke is so thick. Stay safe and know that countless people are worries and sad right along with you and everyone else in the area.

Stay safe. This has been such a strange fire with so little news, funny how its the blogs that seem to be the best source, again.

I just want it to be over.

Wow. That looks pretty close. I'm on a trip to Vienna and the fires made the news here as well. Take care.

We all want it to be over. It looks like it will be two weeks (according to fire service estimates) before this fire is under control.

I did wonder what would be on tap today. is the smoke clearing your way? I was in So Pas today, and it almost seemed smokier than home.

Petrea Burchard said...

Amazing, Karin. I haven't gone to Altadena--trying to stay out of the way, no reason to go there except be in the way...

Can't believe it was smokier in South Pas. I was in North Hollywood and it's smoky in the SF Valley, too. But not as bad as here. It's better in the PM. Morning is bad.

I'm still watching Mt. Wilson and will do so tonight. Can't stop.

If this is any comfort, the species that grow in those mountains are adapted to periodic fires. You'll be amazed at how quickly new green growth sprouts up. Here is a picture from Mendocino county, about a month after one of our big lightning fires: http://twitpic.com/g1h7d

Photo link referenced above. Sorry, forgot how to do that.

Glad I read the comments. I thought the am photo meant the fires had moved. I am so very very sorry. I hope this ends soon for everyone concerned. Frightening.

Thank you for so many informational links. They are very helpful in understanding what's going on. It's horrible and scary. Only once when we lived in the San Diego area did we have to pack up in case of an evacuation. My heart goes out to all involved, especially those who have lost loved ones or homes.

The smoke is sooo thick.

We have smoke piling up here in NoHo now. The fire is visible just in the distance on our side of the mountains; first time that's happened since I moved here...

Scary stuff.

I hope it ends soon and that they are able to keep flames away from the top of Mt. Wilson and the observatory. Take care.

Man, uh Woman, that was a bad "smoggy" day this morning, wasn't it P!

A real smog day wooda gotten worse in the afternoon. Today the sky actually got better!

I just better not here any complaints about the bad smokey skies from smokers.

I think "weary" is a good word for how I feel right now. And sad. It helps to know it will grow back; in fact I can't quite put my finger on why I'm sad. I'm sad for the loss of life and of homes, but this loss of the landscape is something more.

Maybe that's not it. It's just so big, bigger than we are. Nature does what she does, and too bad. She always will. It reminds me of something attributed to George Carlin--I think he made fun of people who said we were destroying the earth. He said we can't destroy the earth. We might destroy our environment and ourselves, but the earth will prevail.

J---your heart may be breaking, but so are thousands of others with you.

What an incredible vision and how sad a sight. Even from here, I've cried watching the pictures---frames of my youth going up in smoke. Some of it does need to happen, but on such a grand scale is scary and sad.

I hope everyone is as safe as they can be, you're all in our thoughts and prayers.

But...please tell me y'all are just EARLY for Xmas with the twinkle lights up on the porch?!?!?! ;-)
